Depends on the device. Phone/tablet - face vs laptop touch

I mean that's a bit of an odd one since we haven't had it yet and I'm convinced it's because they can't make it work as well or at least as accurately yet...at least not without huge costs.

At the same time you wouldn't want your machine to just unlock with your Face and would still want a button press which does mean the "action" remains the same.

Then again the main benefit of FaceID for me is what you can see without unlocking which could change the paradigm of MacOS somewhat.

For me one of the biggest issues is that "brain freeze" moment on my non-FaceID devices which is less of an issue on the MacBook out of years of habit but with the iPad before I got the Pro it was a nightmare.

I suspect the MacBook would be the same that once you have it you just can't go back.

FaceID but honestly I didn't mind touchID on the Iphone SE. On the iPad it's a bit more of a reach - a big reason why I want to get the iPad pro.

Laptop screen is probably to thin to fit all the tech in there. A real pity.

Yeah like I said above it's that case of once you have it you can't go back.

The fact it's always working in the background whereas TouchID needs activate participation is really the big change and people without FaceID either don't know about this or forgets it.

It is deeply annoying to position your finger for all sorts of kak all the time.

Just imagine how much better MacOS would be with live authentication while you work...so much time saved and so much smoother a workflow that at the moment requires stopping, freezing and then going "oh yes my finger".

It's a proximity thing. I don't want to have to get my face all up close and personal with my laptop screen to unlock it.

ATM my watch unlocks it, so it's no inconvenience.

My ipad is still touch ID and it's a schlep.

100% which is exactly why I think they haven't implemented it yet.

So if it "just worked" at your normal sitting distance you would favour it over TouchID?

At the moment even with a Watch unlock though whenever you need to authenticate it's an extra step that would be gone with FaceID.

We use TouchID for Passwordless across the board and it would become near transparent with FaceID on the Mac.

I learnt recently that TouchID in some respects isn't terribly robust, I was working with griptape(sandpaper) putting new grip tape on a skateboard. I ran my fingers over the sandpaper a few times in the process of doing the job and for the next 2 weeks TouchID was lost, it was a real pita to get it to register my fingerprints. Especially a few days after the fact it was very difficult using secure apps and paying for things, it’s coming right now but it was pretty sucky at the time. I don't recall ever having a similar issue with my Samsung phones and in the past I used to work with sandpaper quite often.

TouchID. It's a pain when my self conscious phone always thinks I'm looking at it. Besides, I think touchID is probably less draining on the battery... OnePlus 12 BTW. Both work extremely well...

iPad11 is FaceID, don't think there's touch option. Actually don't enjoy face unlock on the iPad cause the cover I use and the way I instinctively hold it in landscape mode, I'm always covering the front facing camera array. Pain in the ass, I then need to swipe for the pin prompt to come up!! You wouldn't believe how aggravating it is. I surprised myself... I also surprised myself in how difficult it is, to learn how to hold it differently!! Eh, 1st world issues hey?

I don't think I'd care. It's a laptop - my fingers are going to have to be close to the laptop in order to operate it

Same again, my hand would already be there so face ID really wouldn't make a difference.

I'm probably not going to explain this well but all things being equal I prefer an active setup, where I manually authenticate something, rather than a passive one.

Yup, this is the problem with it being too secure.

My mom had similar issues for a while after burning herself.

How do you mean when it thinks you are looking at it?

The battery is an interesting thing but shouldn't matter much as it only activates when authentication is required.
