I’m a couple of months in with using my first FaceID iPad (M4 with the repositioned sensor), and I swear it works way more consistently on a phone than an iPad.

How do you mean when it thinks you are looking at it?

The battery is an interesting thing but shouldn't matter much as it only activates when authentication is required.
I haven't actually put the battery thing to the test so you may be right.

I could lift my phone to check the onscreen notifications and it's unlocking and getting ready for interaction, when I'm merely having a glance...

I don't think I'd care. It's a laptop - my fingers are going to have to be close to the laptop in order to operate it

Same again, my hand would already be there so face ID really wouldn't make a difference.

I'm probably not going to explain this well but all things being equal I prefer an active setup, where I manually authenticate something, rather than a passive one.

You see when you are in a hectically secure environment with multiple authentications a day it becomes much more of an onerous task to stop and take the action to scan it when it could have been done transparently in the background.

FaceID : I open up my FNB app and go to accounts and it just automatically shows them to me no intervention required.

TouchID : I open up the FNB app and go to accounts...now it stops and I need to take a moment to say oh yes right move my hand awkwardly and then hold it still and only then do we get somewhere.

Obviously the point of reference is a bit different since we don't have FaceID on the Mac yet...but the above process numerous times a day could be so much better.

And they could in fact increase security levels by having MORE authentication in place as it would just work in the background.

Yeah but the alternative benefit of that is that your notifications can be camouflaged and then looked out without any interaction.

Whereas with TouchID you would need to touch the Home button to view those notifications.

So FaceID is what makes the glance possible, TouchID would require more work.

I see no need for TouchID. FaceID FTW.

Back in the day, my Samsung S9 had an iris scanner that worked well enough. It failed when I had my glasses on. The Samsung ditched it for the under display fingerprint scanner in the S20. I hated it, it only worked the first time round about half the time. More often than not I had to try a few times to get it to scan properly. Hopefully since then the tech has improved.

FaceID just works, without issues, whether I'm wearing glasses or not. I don't have a twin or a doppelganger in my friends group, so I'm willing to sacrifice 20% security for 80% convenience.

My iPad Air has TouchID, and I really dislike it.

More like 0.002% security concern.

Interesting since my biggest issue is that I’m left handed and it’s on the left on mine.

It works every time, I just have to do this weird hand out of the way wave thing.

Why the preference for the tablet? Remember cost is not a factor.
I seldom grab a tab head-on position wise, it is normally at an angle or a distance from my face so based on that TouchID would be better but not something drastic to have FaceID in place of TouchID.

For me reaching around the corner is far more of an issue than angling the whole tablet.

If older with the Home button the disconnect is that the whole interface is built for FaceID and gestures so you never use the home button any more and therefore it’s odd to go press it for this.

TouchID. It's a pain when my self conscious phone always thinks I'm looking at it. Besides, I think touchID is probably less draining on the battery... OnePlus 12 BTW. Both work extremely well...

iPad11 is FaceID, don't think there's touch option. Actually don't enjoy face unlock on the iPad cause the cover I use and the way I instinctively hold it in landscape mode, I'm always covering the front facing camera array. Pain in the ass, I then need to swipe for the pin prompt to come up!! You wouldn't believe how aggravating it is. I surprised myself... I also surprised myself in how difficult it is, to learn how to hold it differently!! Eh, 1st world issues hey?
The newer iPads will have the face unlock camera on the long side supporting landscape mode, Apple have finally cottoned on that's how most people use iPads.

It’s the angle for me. Sensor is on bottom edge so I have to tilt it for biometrics when i go into the banking app for example.

Bottom? It should be at the top. Just turn it around.

I'm part of the minority that prefers TouchID. Yes, it falls apart after a long swim or your fingers are wet, but if you're in bed in the middle of winter with only your snout sticking out, you're multitasking and can't be directly in front of the camera, there's a cat sitting mostly in your mouth, or whatever the case may be, FaceID tells you to get lost. TouchID irritated me a LOT less than FaceID does.

I used FaceID in bed in pure darkness, can’t say this has ever been an issue on either my phone or iPad.

But I don’t have a cat.

You don’t ever need to be directly in front of the camera, just be able to look directly at it.

It doesn’t need light, but try having your face against a pillow or half under a duvet?

As for the last bit, you don’t need to be directly in front of it, but you need to be within its field of view. I can (and often do) use my phone flat on my desk while multitasking. Approximately 45 degree angle. I can see it, it can’t see me.
