Facelifted Duster busts into SA

Exclusive....how many things are cut with a diamond?

That's a daft reason and the answer is all the other diamonds.

So I had to cut some concrete driveway to access a water pipe in the courtyard the other day. Did I increse the value of the concrete slab, cause I used a diamond tipped blade on the angle grinder?

Just "breaking your balls" man

Of course you did..

The slab now has diamond dust in it...

Renault Duster Scores Zero Stars In Its Basic Version (India)

In the second set of #SaferCarsForIndia results for 2017, Global NCAP has released the ratings for crash tests conducted on the Renault Duster in its basic version without airbags and, at the request of the manufacturer, in the version with an optional driver airbag.

The Duster, which is sold without airbags in its basic version, recorded a disappointing zero stars for adult occupant protection. The crash test showed that due to the lack of airbags the driver injuries would have been unacceptably high.

The Duster also scored 2 stars for rear seat child occupant protection.

Following the test, Renault asked Global NCAP to test a version of the Duster which included a single driver airbag. This increased the score to 3 stars for adult occupant protection, child protection remained the same at 2 stars.

Global NCAP decided to further investigate the Duster as a single airbag version was tested by Latin NCAP in 2015 where it scored 4 stars.

It was found that the Indian Duster airbag was smaller than that of the Latin American Duster. The difference in airbag size brings corresponding differences in protection.

With the Indian Duster the head of the driver did not contact the airbag in the centre as it should, exposing the head to impact on the steering wheel and therefore more risk of injuries.

This can be seen when the head reaches maximum front excursion and compresses the airbag.

The Latin American Duster airbag on the other hand was a larger size and covered the head and chest of the driver.

With the head in maximum forward excursion the airbag still shows containment to the head protecting it from the steering wheel.

These differences explain the difference in protection level and why the Latin American version scored 4 stars and the Indian version only 3 stars under same testing assessment and criteria.

So, in light of the above GlobalNCAP crash test report on the Indian-manufactured Renault Duster, my question to Renault SA is the following:

"Do Renault India fit the versions of the Duster sold In South Africa with the Indian-spec 'smaller' driver airbag, or does it have the larger 'Latin America-spec' driver airbag fitted?"

Also, if the Duster is in fact fitted with the 'smaller' Indian-spec driver airbag for the SA market, what is the justification thereof - seeing as a COST factor benefit seems to override a SAFETY factor benefit for the occupants.

Local Dusters do not come from India. Hey are brought in from Romania, in full Euro-spec.

The previous Duster brought to SA was built in India however Renault SA has decided to source the new models from Romania. From 2015 the Duster facelift apparently Renault SA has changed its source for the Duster from India to Romania, resulting in a better quality product.

Zero-star Global NCAP crash rating for base spec Renault Duster in India

'Troubling' result for Renault’s Indian version of the Dacia Duster; airbag-equipped model still only achieves three stars

The Indian-market Renault Duster has achieved a zero-star rating from Global NCAP, prompting concern from the organisation’s secretary general.

The Duster scored zero stars in standard form, and only three with airbags equipped. Renault has drawn criticism for its differing standards of safety for different markets.

David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP said: “It is troubling that during the UN Road Safety Week we yet again encounter a zero-star car in our crash testing in India. Renault produces the Duster in a number of markets and yet it seems content to provide a version for India that falls so far short on safety.”

Renault was also criticised for its three-star rated Duster; the airbag, despite being the only feature on the car maintaining its three-star rating, it was found to be a smaller than the airbag used on the South American-spec car; when Latin NCAP tested the Duster, it was rated four stars.

The smaller airbag, said NCAP, increased the risk of the driver’s head missing the airbag, or slipping off it and hitting the steering wheel.

It should be noted that this does not affect UK-spec Dacia Dusters.

It’s not the first time Renault has been criticised on the matter. Last yea,r the Kwid – one of Renault’s most successful models in India – was awarded a single star in its safest form, and zero stars in standard spec.

Global NCAP has set out a plan to eradicate zero-star cars from all markets by 2020, by establishing a basic crash structure and one airbag as the bare minimum of equipment required on a new car.

A Renault UK spokesman said: "Safety is of paramount importance for Renault and all of our vehicles meet or exceed the safety standards set by Indian Regulatory Authorities. India is continuing to increase safety standards and the Bharat NCAP is a positive step in that direction. Renault fully supports this initiative and we are prepared in terms of technology, design and engineering for enhanced safety for all our vehicles. The Indian government has announced that the crash test regulation for existing cars will come into effect in 2019 and for new cars in 2017. Renault fully supports this."

I wish they would do the 1.5 4x4 in Automatic :( . I hate driving manual cars and this is such a good, affordable 4x4. At 10k extra with auto i wouldnt blink twice.

Watch Renault Duster score ZERO stars in crash-test

Global NCAP has released new safety ratings for two Renault Duster variants after crash-testing the popular SUV in India.

It must be noted, however, that all four Renault Duster derivatives sold in South Africa come standard with four airbags. In addition, all SA-spec models come standard with ABS (with EBD), something the Indian versions do without.

The base model Duster, which is sold in India without airbags, recorded zero stars for adult occupant protection in the latest evaluation. According to Global NCAP, the test showed that due to the lack of airbags, injuries to the driver would have been “unacceptably high”. For rear seat child occupant protection, the Duster scored two stars.

Renault then asked Global NCAP to test a version of the Duster with a single driver’s airbag. This increased the score to three stars for adult occupant protection.

Global NCAP says it decided to “further investigate” the Duster since a single-airbag version was tested by Latin NCAP in 2015, scoring four stars. Interestingly, the safety authority found that the Indian-market Duster airbag was smaller than that of the Latin American version.

“The difference in airbag size brings corresponding differences in protection. With the Indian Duster, the head of the driver did not contact the airbag in the centre as it should, exposing the head to impact on the steering wheel and therefore more risk of injuries,” Global NCAP said in its report.

“This can be seen when the head reaches maximum front excursion and compresses the airbag. The Latin American Duster airbag, on the other hand, was a larger size and covered the head and chest of the driver. With the head in maximum forward excursion the airbag still shows containment to the head protecting it from the steering wheel.”

David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP, shared his disappointment.

“It is troubling that during the UN Road Safety Week we yet again encounter a zero-star car in our crash testing in India. Renault produces the Duster in a number of markets and yet it seems content to provide a version for India which falls so far short on safety,” said Ward.

Watch the two crash-test videos below. The first shows the basic Duster (sans airbag), while the second is the model with the single airbag.
