Fake / Conterfeit USB drives doing the rounds again.

I have seen these guys at the street corners, they are selling the 32Gb drives for R150.00 here in Cape Town.

If you buy a 32GB drive for R150.00 from a traffic light vendor then you should be scammed for stupidity.

A few weeks ago while driving down Malibongwe drive to Sybaritic I saw many enthusiastic vendors selling either fake black or white 32 and 64GB 'JetFlash 300' Transcend drives. I'm not even sure that they realise they are fakes. If you've ever bought the genuine item you can spot a fake immediately - Transcend don't make a 64GB JetFlash 300, the band around the fake USB connector is usually green (only the 4GB genuine JF300 has a green band), there are no perforations to assist with opening the plastic sleeve, low quality plastic body etc.

i seen 128GB, 256GB and 880GB "Kingston" Flash drives brought in from China. Lol
once u copy more than 1 folder on it the other folders all stay empty.

Heh, talk about "mobile" internet!

But the fact that they are even making (fake) drives of that "capacity" concerns me, as obviously someone thinks there are people gullible enough to fall for it.

Once you know about the scam then it seems stupid to buy a large flash drive off the street but if you don't keep up to date with these things then it looks like a good offer. The hawkers sell other products like car mp3 players and iPod chargers etc. which presumably work much cheaper than name brands. The major cost of a flash drive is the flash chips themselves and not manufacturing so there isn't much room for large price reductions unless the goods are fake.
