Fake Mandela bank notes emerge

Just two weeks after being released, counterfeit Mandela notes have emerged. SABC News has a fake hundred rand bill in its possession. The Reserve Bank and the police say they are aware that the new notes have been counterfeited.

The new notes were launched with much fanfare. With new and improved security features, but already rouges are busy at work. Fake notes including the Mandela bills are on sale.

On inspection the fake, does not have a watermark. When held to the light there is no shadow of Nelson Mandela. The silver security thread does not bear the coat of arms or the words 'SARB' and 'Rand'.

If memory serves me correctly, its impregnated into the paper, so you can't just "Print" it...

You'd really think journalists would be able to tell the difference between rouges and rogues.

Also, the article was written by a Ms Chriselda Lewis, so I don't get where "Xhosa, Zulu or Sotho" came from and can only imagine that you were trying to turn this into another charming racial spat, which it was definitely not intended to be.

Get that chip off your shoulder and start taking pride in a work standard that is only just above gutter-grade.
 
I wonder how bad this problem is. If it's just a few notes, it's a big deal, but if fakes are widespread, we'll be in big trouble. I know that Switzerland keeps a whole set of note in reserve in case of major counterfeiting.
 
Can I just say the new notes suck in terms of look? the R10, R50 have too much colour in them. The R20 looks bearable and I haven't seen a 100.
 
It always happen when new notes come out.
They pray on the knowledge that we will not know if something is off.
 
They really have made it easier for people to fake the new notes by distracting them with their blinding overly bright colours.
 
There are nine security features that I know of and can look for.
It's not that hard to learn them and be aware of them.
 
It did not take long did it? FFS, that is South Africa you are talking about. Actually I am surprised the fake bank notes were not released first :D WTF

The same thing happened when they switched to the animal notes from the jvr ones. I remember almost every shop having uv lights and staff were instructed to check every note.
