Basic points:

Action Points
For playing up to 60 minutes 1
For playing 60 minutes or more 2
For each goal scored by a goalkeeper or defender 6
For each goal scored by a midfielder 5
For each goal scored by a forward 4
For each goal assist 3
For a clean sheet by a goalkeeper or defender 4
For a clean sheet by a midfielder 1
For every 3 shot saves by a goalkeeper 1
For each penalty save 5
For each penalty miss -2
Bonus points for the best players in a match 1-3
For every 2 goals conceded by a goalkeeper or defender -1
For each yellow card -1
For each red card -3
For each own goal -2

basically you get points from clean sheets ( defence and GK scores most points, and midfield gets 1 point, I think), assists ( defence gets the most points for an assist, then midfield and then forwards) and and goals ( defence gets most points, followed midfield and strikers)

all in all though the game is very much geared to players who score or assist regardless of position. that's why goal scoring and assist helping defenders like Invanovic and Baines are worth so much more comparatively to other defenders.

Also, its impossible to have all the stars in your team because of budget constraints and thus you need to find value in the market with some lesser or underrated players. Henderson or milner, for example at 7m is a good option as he will get a few goals and assists.

Players like Matic, while world class in real life, offers very little in terms of point scoring and hence he's valued at 5m.

Finally, based on players performances and %selected by all managers - their value is likely to increase or decrease. this is very very important. getting your team worth to ~ 110 million gives you a distinct advantage over a 100m team so look at your changes carefully and make sure you have players who are starting a "hot streak" as their value will rise very very quickly and you could be outpriced in the market or end up paying a premium to ensure you don't lose ground on fellow managers.

long term, make sure you have some of the following players: sanchez, aguero, costa, fabregas, hazard ( actually, I strongly recomend adding him NOW. he's a beast in this game), Silva, possibly Sterling, rooney ( especially now that's actually playing as UTD main striker).

These guys will consistently and I mean consistently give you great points.

EDIT: I think you've spent too much on defence, save a few quid and upgrade some players in midfield and attack.

also, I much prefer the 3-4-3 formation, gets you more points IMO.

Look at Deeney... Cheap and has been banging it in for fun in the championship for 3 seasons... Might be a better option than Defoe....
