When's the HSDPA PCI-x cards going to be released and what will the prices be? I heard it was this month.
Anybody got info about the USB ones too?

The Novatel XU870 Express Slot HSDPA card was approved last week, the USB modems are already available, the Huawei E220.

I believe the Novatel Express card is already 7.2Mb/s ready! The E220 is 3.6Mb/s.

Is that Express Slot or PCI-Express like lilDeath posted? Also can we rebrand the Huawei E220, I don't know how to pronounce it and wiki isn't of much help.

The preview version of this card looked really big and bulky. Did they slim it down a bit?

Not trying to be insensitive towards Chinese speaking people, but I also have some difficulty with the word 'Huawei' and for some reason my brain keeps telling me to spell it like this: Hauwei, I suggest we abbreviate it to something like: HW. . .
Can't we just say Hawaii?

I have spoken to a friend of mine from the east and had them pronounce it for me. The closest word we have is probably highway - although the true pronounciation sounds a little different at the start.

Just call it the E620 I suppose....

Having just had a look at what it says at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huawei, methinks the pronunciation should be something like HWAY or HIR-WAY [as in HER-WAY], can any Chinese speaking forumites please confirm the correct pronunciation? - we may as well get it right :).
I just say huhway, but prefer not to say it at all. So I'll rather just show them a picture. :)

dang, I just took it that he meant PCI-x...

Based on the Mandarin Pinyin chinese alphabet it should be something like
howwatchwoodlate (say the letters in bold)
The nearest word in english would therfor probably be hwaway.
thisa is getting funny

hwaway? gooniegoogoo?? :D

Now both of you have me confused. Did you mean Express Slot or PCI Express? PCI Express is the bus for desktop systems. Express Slot is a PCMCIA bus for use with laptops and is loosely based on PCI Express but not entirely. If you're looking for the former you are unlikely to find it as PCI Express seems to only be for graphics at this stage. If you want the latter then it is probably the one V3g mentioned.

Hi, hoping someone from this forum can help an older, less educated computer guy just moving to SA from USA. I will be working for a small NGO where three of us will need computer access. There are no comuters now and we will be just outside of Polokwane. So, here is our plan. To get the Linksys router wrt54g3g and Vodacom data card. I will take any advice but my questiions are 1) do I have a choice of routers that work with the Vodacom data card & 2) where is the least expensive place to purchase the router?

That would be great :).

Seems like forumites don't have an opinion, and no time like the present to make some changes, so here goes :).
Don't ask and you have everybody complaining, but ask and NO ONE answers.

I suggest verifying that there is Vodacom 3G[HSDPA] coverage in the general area where the NGO will be located in Polokwane, best to verify this at http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/3g/coverage_map.jsp, as well as get feedback from any forumites that might already be using 3G|HSDPA there...
The data coverage map is in the process of being updated so don't take it as gospel if it shows no coverage. There has been a huge number of additional Vodacom 3G/HSDPA sites commissioned countrywide over the last few weeks, and not all of these are currently reflected on the map. Likewise, there are still other sites to be commissioned, so keep checking on the map.

Spent some time with the Huawei crowd earlier today at GSM Africa and remembered to ask them to pronounce it for me a few times. Best bet would be to pronounce it:

"Wowee"

They'll have their 7.2Mb/s cards available in the near future.

I also asked them why the E220 USB modem is so much better at reception than the data cards and they claim they've integrated the antenna into the USB cable!

Suppose it's technically possible, but that also connects it to your whole pc and chassis. Wonder how they dealt with interference, but then if you can use your house mains wiring as tv antenna anything's possible. I wonder if I'll be able to find a circuit on the web to do that. Imagine hsdpa with an antenna the size of a house... I'm off. :D
