All 3G towers are HSDPA enabled.

Not all GPRS towers are EDGE enabled yet.

Have a look at the coverage map to see EDGE coverage.

I get 80kbps on GPRS - but I see on the map there is no EDGE coverage where I am. So, why am I getting more than 42kbps?

I'll add some info in the FAQ on the variou Modulation & Coding Schemes.

On GPRS you can go up to CS4 and this will give you the speed you see, around 80Kb/s.

'Old' GPRS was on CS2 and this gave you around 40Kb/s

The tower I attach to, is enabled for CS4 and I easily peak up to around 80Kb/s with an average throughput of more than 60Kb/s.

If you have a throughput problem, do the following:

1) Measure your throughput with the Telkom ADSL test. Do a few of these tests.
2) Note the base station you attach to for each test..
3) Get your exact physical address.
4) Get all your contact details, including name, contact number, e-mail, etc.
5) PM me the whole bunch.

Let approach this in an empirical and not esoteric fashion.

Pricing Difference

Hi V3g

I have Bulletin VSPC-06-098 and on the first page which is part of your first post they quote a price of R 1899 (excl. VAT). Part No. VMC3GBD

Can u confirm if this is the price that we will pay.

Thanks

Most shops are selling for R2699, VAT Incl.

HSDPA worth it

I just installed a HSDPA card and it is really faster than the old 3G one.

VC3G, I have a Vodafone Mobile Connect Card (Option Colt) which I bought cash. Can I also get a R400 rebate on the new HSDPA card? I do not have a sperate 3G One contract...

Hi v3G, My cousin took out a 3G contract with the 500mb option on march the 6th is there a posibility of him changing it to an HSDPA card, as i remember you saying that contracts that were purchased a month before the lunch of HSDPA will be able to get the new card??

If I understand the info correctly, he'll get a HSDPA card for free!

Any contract signed after 1 Feb will get a free swap out. Take it up with your (his) SP. Let me know the outcome.

V3g, do I understand from above that only certain towers are equipped with CS4? If so, what determines which towers are equipped and are all towers eventually going to be equipped with CS4 and when?

Most of the time I see similar GPRS speeds to what you mention, but on occasions while away from Durban and 3G, I see lower speeds in certain spots.

I think thay should be by now. In any case, all towers will end up on CS4 and if they're not, it's more a backhaul issue. The towers are normally upgraded if there is enough capacity to warrant the higher radio speed.

Same with EDGE and MCS9.
