First black farming couple murdered in Free State – AfriForum
by Esmarie Prinsloo on 26 May, 2014

AfriForum today renewed its pleas to government to declare farm murders a priority crime and establish specialist units for rural safety. This came after the deaths of Andrew and Loryn Monakane (both 39) who were brutally murdered on their farm Graigmont near Dewetsdorp in the Free State. According to the register kept by AfriForum the Monakanes were the first black farming couple who were murdered in a farm attack in the province.

“This incident is a clear indicator that white South Africans are not the only victims of farm attacks and that government’s attempt to stamp AfriForum’s campaign against farm murders as racial does not carry any weight. Rural areas are unsafe and the refusal of the police to institute proper security aggravates the situation,” said Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum.

Mr Monakane was shot dead. Mrs Monakane was raped and shot in the face. Media reports stated that she died in her home a day after her release from hospital.
AfriForum says a black farmer from the Eastern Cape and his housekeeper were also murdered earlier this year.

“We would like to establish a cooperative relationship with the new Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, to ensure safety in rural areas,” Cameron concluded.

She died a day after being released from hospital?

Lephalale - The bail application of a man accused of killing a 76-year-old woman on a farm near Lephalale was postponed in the local magistrate's court, Limpopo police said on Monday.

He would remain in custody until the application on February 17, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

Phillip Kgoantha, 22, faces charges of murder and theft after he allegedly killed his employer, Susan Kotze, earlier this month. Her relatives found her after they failed to reach her.

“Police were called and when they broke into the house the body was discovered. It would seem as if she had been strangled with a wire coat hanger,” Otto said.

Kgoantha allegedly fled the scene with two cellphones, a small amount of cash and Kotze's bakkie.

He was arrested at his uncle's home in Northam

In the latest incident, Wimpie Oosterhuis (54) and his wife Sunette were attacked on their farm near Delmas in Leandra on February 4, 2015.

Jaco Oosterhuis (51), a farmer from Delmas in Mpumalanga stands next to his older brother’s hospital bed after he was severely beaten and shot during the farm attack Wednesday night.

Seven years after Jaco himself survived a similar horrible experience.

Jaco told Maroela Media on Thursday Wimpie and Sunette arrived home about 20:00 where they were met by three or four attackers. “My brother’s garage is about 30 m from the house. He stopped his car to open the door when the attackers overpowered him, “Jaco said. “They kicked and beat him and demanded money.” They also assaulted Sunette.

The couple was tied up outside the house while the attackers ransacked the house. By Thursday family members noted that the attackers fled in the couple’s pick-up truck along with a television set, laptop and cell phones.
“My brother was not at the home again to know exactly what is missing,” said Jaco. “When the attackers fled, they wiggled themselves loose and drove in their other vehicle to neighbors to call for help.” The couple’s truck was later found near Eendracht.
Wimpie was taken to the Mediclinic Highveld in Trichardt near Secunda, where he underwent an operation. He was still in the operating room when Maroela Media called. “The sister said that there was shrapnel in his arm. So he was assaulted and we suspect that he was also shot” Jaco said. He said Wimpie got very confused when they talked fast. “I suspect he has a concussion. He could not remember all the events that happened. “Sunette is traumatized but okay “.
Jaco himself survived a farm attack in March 2008. He was attacked in the early hours by three men in his house on his maize farm near Delmas. He was in his bed about 01:30 when they beat him with a machete on the head and face. He was shot in the left chest when he fought back against his attackers. The bullet missed his heart narrowly. His family was with him in the house but was unharmed.
The attackers fled without stealing anything. “So far no one has been arrested. I’m still waiting for the police to take my statement“, he said.
” I am going to take this further. It is time that something concrete is done about farm attacks; only talking helps nothing, “he said determined.

KAAPMUIDEN – The manager of Althorpe Farm, a mango and sugar-cane farm, was left bruised after being assaulted and burnt with an iron during an armed robbery on Monday evening.

Mr Neville Eekhout (72) returned home after visiting friends when three heavily armed men pointed guns at him, demanding money and threatening to kill him.

The attackers entered the property just before 20:00. He was tied up and assaulted while they ransacked his home for firearms and other items. The robbers fled in his stolen white Toyota Hilux 2.2.

The motive for their vicious assault on Eekhout was to get the safe’s key in order to gain access to the money in the house.
According to Cllr Mariette Preddy, DA representative of Nkomazi Municipality, Eekhout had been out with friends and walked straight into the ambush.

“When he returned to his home and entered the garage, the attackers suddenly surrounded him. They held a gun to his head and dragged him to his office where the assaulted continued.”

The suspects also tied him up with his own shoelaces before kicking and beating him. He was knocked out twice and burnt numerous times on his arms and back. Luckily, he regained consciousness when his Labrador started licking his face.

The assailants fled the scene roughly an hour later with six firearms, bank cards and an undisclosed amount of cash. They also stole Eekhout’s deceased wife’s jewellery as well as clothing, knives and bread before fleeing in his bakkie.

The farm’s security guards alerted the Kaapmuiden police after witnessing the attackers leaving the farm.

The SAPS and medical services were on the scene shortly after the first emergency call went out. Securicon Lowveld’s medical team was also on the scene to treat Eekhout’s burn wounds and other injuries.

According to Kaapmuiden SAPS, the Hilux was found on Tuesday morning next to the road near the farm on the N4 by one of the farm workers.

A regional search team consisting of the SAPS, security companies and community members, had been launched the night before but poor light made it difficult to find the suspects and stolen vehicle.

According to Mr Mel Preddy of the local community policing forum, special care needed to be taken in terms of household security.

“There is nothing to suggest that only farm residents are at risk. The men are armed and dangerous and are still at large,” he stated.

Corridor Gazette attempted to speak to Eekhout, but could not reach him at the time of going to press as his cellphone had been
stolen.

The paper also visited the farm but was told by one of the workers that Eekhout’s family had come and fetch him.

Calling it like it is for once.

And how does the media normally call it? A botched robbery or attack at most. Not what you're hinting at that's for sure.

The media doesn't usually follow up on any motive, leave it to the comment section and sensationalism.

Oh for sure! There I'm in total agreement. The comment section is pure opinion.

I must commend the journos in KZN, they have been quite good on following up on the sentencing of the farm attackers. Elsewhere, not so much.

Step 1, get a gun any gun. Step 2, shoot anyone who trespass your property. Step3 burry the ****ers deep underground. Done! Moeg vir die ***
