Farm Attacks

#FarmAttack – No bail for Van Rooyen killers

Five men appeared in Vryheid Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with the murder of Billy Van Rooyen and Ronnie Lombard.

Before the Magistrate stood five of the six killers who were recently arrested for the brutal farm attack, which took place in April this year. The sixth assassin, Bongani Miya, never made it to his first court appearance, having taken his own life in the holding cells shortly after his arrest in May.

Despite their cold-blooded crimes, no remorse appeared evident as the murderers withdrew their bail applications and the case was postponed, pending further investigation, to June 27.

Despite their cold-blooded crimes, no remorse appeared evident as the murderers withdrew their bail applications and the case was postponed, pending further investigation, to June 27.

Investigating Officer, Captain Attie Engelbrecht, has been diligent and unrelenting in his investigations and, despite the long road to justice that lays ahead, further arrests appear imminent.

Good. Hope they all commit "suicide"

This week we've heard that Farm attacks are going to be prioritised by the SAPS. Well, later , over one of the Whatsapp Security groups for the farmers a message came "We're going to kill all you farmers". They went to lay charges at the police office, and the officers wouldn't do it.

Working hand in hand is a serious possibility.

Sounds unlikely. Do you have a decent source for this?

The reason being, either the admin of the group let random people join (ie, criminals) or, the criminals used a stolen phone... in either case they would know the phone number, and in the case of the stolen phone, would know from whom it was stolen.

You're a cheerful chap!

From an acquaintance who is involved in the patrolling in the area.

Luckily they know who it is right, since the admin added the person to the whatsapp group. If they can't get help from the police maybe they should go talk to the sender themselves...

Nothing stops someone joining the group without an ID photo. Yes, admins should demand actual. Should one go around and ask who knows someone who joined? Comes to mind.

What fkng groups are you guys on? Here in the farming community we only add people after being introduced at their residence and discussing protocol, getting their commitment to the area they are in. They also then have an option to buy a cb radio, pay license fee and join the channel for our area. We have the standard sector channel and a private one. Only 1 person setting up the radios.

You get added to a whatsapp group by invite from a admin, you can't just join it.

then the phone must have been stolen...couldn't have been sms how would they get numbers of the farmers other than Whatsapp? Not my group, see post #606

Criminals target isolated farms - top cop

Pretoria - Criminals attacking farmers and people who live on smallholdings have changed their approach and are now going for those that are more isolated, acting national commissioner Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane said on Thursday.

"Our analysis has shown that there is a particular modus operandi visible during the commission of these incidents of violence and crime on farms and smallholdings. The analysis has shown that there has been a major shift in target selection from smallholdings to more isolated farms," he said during a press briefing with AgriSA.

"Furthermore, another feature is that they mostly occur between Thursday and Saturday at night, while most victims are attacked while asleep."

The meeting was part of an on-going engagement with structures and various roleplayers within the agricultural environment in a bid to curb farm killings. Phahlane said earlier in May that there had been another meeting with AfriForum, where they had committed to continue with the engagements aimed at ensuring that farming and rural communities were safe.

He said the trends that they had seen indicated that the number of perpetrators at a time ranged from two to eight; split into two groups at most incidents. He said, while the crimes were alarming, there was a decrease in the number of farm attacks.

"We reported earlier in the year that we have since seen a serious decline in the number of reported incidents of violence on farms and smallholdings from 532 in the 2010/2011 financial year, to 446 in the last financial year; which is 2015/2016.

"In addition, there has also been a decline in the number of reported murders on farms and smal holdings, from 80 in the 2010/2011 financial year, to 49 in the 2015/2016 financial year," said Phahlane.

He added that police had identified KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Limpopo and Gauteng as hot spot provinces, with stations where more than two incidents of violence and murder were reported in the 2015/2016 financial year.

Phahlane said discussions were held on matters of common interest aimed at ensuring continuous collaboration and co-operation.

"Both parties have since agreed to have on-going engagement to collaborate on matters of common interest, in due course, and to chat a way forward based on our Back-to-Basics approach to Policing. In addition, we have agreed that there is a need for increased representation of farming communities in the Community Policing Forum structures countrywide," he said.

isolated farmers should create moats around their homes and a drawbridge as their driveway it seems... strangely enough it could work and they have enough space

as the saying goes, a mans home is his castle, or something like that.

Tongaat farm attack puts 80-year-old in ICU

“While beating him up, they kept saying that they want the key to the safe but they wouldn’t stop to allow him to give the key to them. It was almost as if they enjoyed it.”

An elderly couple were attacked and the 80-year-old husband brutally beaten at their home on a farm in Misty Ridge in Upper Tongaat in the early hours of Sunday morning.

”The intruders kicked down the front door. They first went into the office then headed to the house to get the key for the safe, which is in the office. They then made they way to the main bedroom” said the couple’s son, Dave Shepherd.

Their dog started to bark and alerted the elderly woman, Joy Shepherd.

“I walked out to the gate and saw them standing there. I asked what they wanted and they said, ‘mali’ (money),” said Joy.

“I did not know what to do, so I grabbed a stick and poked them with it through the gate.”

Joy said it was not long before they broke the bolts off the gate and entered the house and headed towards the main bedroom.
