The house was cleaned out by these savages. He was killed with a garden fork and then burnt..

FOLLOWING the brutal murder of Billy Van Rooyen and his father in law Ronnie Lombard, the community members of Zwathi took to the streets saying ‘enough is enough’.

These members of the ward 4 community headed down to the Gluckstadt Police Station to hand over a memorandum regarding their concerns over the rise in crime in their area.

The main issue raised in the memorandum was that of the killing of farmers, which in turn has a negative influence on the community’s infrastructure as many of those working on the farms lose their jobs.

Horror farm attack: "They kept beating him down"

Durban – "He kept trying to get up and they kept beating him down.” That was one of the last conversations Paul Shepherd had with his father Simon Shepherd, 80, who died three weeks after being attacked on the family’s farm in

Umhlali, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, in June last year.

Shepherd was in the intensive care unit before he died due to his injuries.

This week, Acting Judge Anand Maharaj handed down a life sentence, and a further 35 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition to the accused Rodgers Sphamandla Ndlovu, 28.

During sentencing, Ndlovu remained largely impassive, except for turning around and grinning at the Shepherd family who were in the court gallery.

The judge slammed the accused, saying “Mr Shepherd was an elderly person who was subject to a vicious assault in the most brutal fashion”, adding that “this crime was well-planned and well-executed”.

Ndlovu had entered a not-guilty plea and as he left the court he appealed to the media, saying he was innocent.

Farmers use weapons for farming as well.

I'd rather say this fking government and protection services must stop letting this happen.

Problem is the ne'er-do-wells are creepsy and tricksy and catch you unawares.

The Commando system need to be reinstated. On smallholdings as well.

And everybody have to take part doing commando training, especially young children, so that they know how to handle a weapon in case of need.

This is war.

Dude, that is a ****ty thing to say.

The current, paranoid, government won't allow that, I'm sure.

This is just South Africa. At night I keep my doors locked.
A lot of communities have set up a type of commando system by doing their own private security. You don't need the government to reinstate anything. They are useless anyway. People just need to realise the dangers and take the necessary precautions. I would think that by now farmers know that they are targets.
Dude, that is a ****ty thing to say.
Yeah that's live. We don't need more guns in the hands of criminals
The current, paranoid, government won't allow that, I'm sure.
They can't stop people from implementing their own private security measures. Just don't be stupid and call it the "boeremag". Treat it like a security company.

'It was like a war' - woman describes how she shot farm attacker

Johannesburg - She fired a few shots at the two burglars in her garage and shouted at them to get out of there.

"The one listened and ran. The other started shooting at me and that’s when I realised there was trouble. I ran to my room to reload. Then he started firing at me in earnest," Christine* told Netwerk24.

"I thought: OK, shoot as much as you like, because I’ll be back. I’m just loading my gun. I’m coming again. It was like a war."

That’s when she shot him.

"He lay bundled up around the corner. I had fired three shots. I saw that he was struggling to get a grip on his gun and realised that I’d wounded him.

"He staggered into the veld.

"I called security and they found the body in the veld. I’d shot him in the arm and the bullet had penetrated his body."

'Martial arts wouldn’t have helped at all'

Police said the attacker had fired 12 shots at her on Wednesday afternoon. Workers on the farm just outside Vereeniging said they recognised the man as someone who had robbed them before.

Christine’s son also lives on the farm, but wasn’t home on Wednesday.

She has been attacked before.

Just shows their intention and mentality, they both had the opportunity to go but only one did.
