I find it fascinating when you are asked : "What is a cap sir?" by a Telkom call centre employee. I generally answer: "that thing on top of your head madam!".

Seriously, how can a company hire somebody that doesn't posess enough mental capacity to peal a potatoe, never mind sell highly involved technical products. Oh...wait....Telkom can do anything they like....because they have the support of the government....which pretty much gives you more freedom than the world will ever see.

Which reminds me: We have no choice as to who provides our ADSL; Nor do we have a choice who provides our fixed line telecommunication service. Does that make this country FREE and FAIR? mmmmm Why did we celebrate 10 years of freedom, when we aren't really free?

Competency?

There are a couple of things that they do that does not make sense for a technical point of view.

Try this. Phone new services 10219 and then wait half and hour before they answer. (do it of a landline) Then tell then you have ISDN 2a and you want to upgrade to DSL. They will tell you its impossible. Because in the advertising leaflet it says that dsl is only for normal residential customers.

PLEASE! I how can this be??? Do they think we are so stupid?

Those people that answer the phones use the filofax system, where each question has a corresponding low-liability answer. This is how call centers work, because people that can think and process information cost to much money!

They must mean is you wish to remain on ISDN at the same time. I "upgraded" from ISDN (as did many others). The simply remove the ISDN and then give ADSL.

I know for a fact xDSL works on ISDN, we've tested this in our test lab in 2002. So just because Telkom don't want to provide it over ISDN, they are telling you it is not possible. You even get DSL modems with a ISDN connection instead of the normal POTS connection.

What would be the benefit of running ADSL on top of ISDN though?

I also upgraded from ISDN with no problems.

ISDN and ADSL run on the same copper wire. You don't 'upgrade' as such. They just move you to an ADSL port at the exchange and give you a different connection point in your house. They used to run specials on 'upgrading' ISDN to ADSL, but now it looks like they first want you to terminate your ISDN to go back to a normal phone-line (also just plain copper wire) so you can upgrade that to ADSL. So you PAY for terminating ISDN and you PAY for upgrading to ADSL. Now that sounds like something Telkom would do...

Technically it is possible to provide a DSL service over a ISDN line with some reduction in speed of the DSL as the ISDN uses more line frequency than analogue. In fact originally Telkom intended releasing this option - however as I was informed when requesting this service, they encountered problems on the network which require more time to investigate and this service would only be released at a later date.
This service was originally described in this pdf file on Telkom's website

my favourite helpdesk experience:

When I signed up for adsl I was speaking to a person who was obviously technically illiterate. She asked what my processor was so I said AMD 2800+ XP. She'd never heard of AMD before so I had to spell it out and explain that Intel isn't the only chip maker in the world.

Then the real priceless part came when I asked if they had 1mbps adsl yet (this was before it was launched). After much confusion she explained to my that the only packages they offer are 192, 384 and 512. She explained it like this:

"The speed of the 192 is 192. The speed of the 384 is 384. The speed of the 512 is 512 ..."

Allllrigghttyyy!! Shot bru! Now I know ;)

ADSL over ISDN

The whole point is, that telkom publish this **** in there adverts. Thats what is says. So I don't see the extra cost or effort of simply swoping the isdn port to a dslam as opposed to swopping a analog line to a dslam. So it would cost 2 x R404 to change from ISDN2a to dsl!

Another thing is that on my phone bill telkom charge for the line extention of the rj11. There charge R1,45 per month for rental of 10m of cable and a rj11 jack. So this has been going on for 10 years now.

**** I just don't have the energy to complain. The moral is, when it comes to telkom, DIY is still the best.

I wonder if i can ask if i can run my own copper pair to exchange to reduce the rental ?

Probably thinks it's an equitable form of birth-control. All queries on self-provision are routed to Manto's department...
