Netflix + UnoTelly.

For less than R200 a month, I have all the fancy things DSTV has to offer... And then some. Popular sport matches can be streamed.

You cannot really work the line access into the equation, since it's not dedicated.

Btw, does storms still cause DSTV to loose connectivity these days?

If you have a Samsung Smart TV then you can just download an App on your TV.

Strange, I'm watching The Last Ship, Extant, True Blood Season 7, Conan, The Leftovers, Wil Wheaton Project and Last week tonight with John Oliver.
Tonight The Strain airs on FX and I will be watching it tomorrow.

Oh yes, they are all indeed in HD..... and there are no OMO adverts.

You guys need to stop trying to steam everything and install sickbeard instead - the shows are uploaded a few hours after they air in the US, and sickbeard will take care of downloading it for you.
So what if we don't have 42Mbps lines here in SA? We don't need them - if Couch Potato pre-downloads everything I don't see where the problem lies?


Streaming can be unreliable, watching a pre-downloaded mp4/mkv will never fail you.
You also have a lot more content than Netflix and you don't need to jump through hoops to pay for the service or to fool proxy's/etc.
 
I don't have DSTV and I hate Naspers. In fact, we do not consume ant boredcast material in my house.

Spaaawwwttsss is for the sheeple.
 
I need my relatively fast internet - I can't live without it and I won't be able to make a living.

Adding DStv Premium on top of that is just not an option for me. It would be so nice if, like in [-]many[/-] some other countries, the two were combined at the price of a DStv Premium subscription. Until that happens, I will have to look at other alternatives where I use my internet subscription that I already pay for.

There's nothing worse than the end of a show being cut off because the group responsible was in too much of a hurry to be first - well maybe the sync being off is worse come to think of it.

I'm all for downloading, I get a fair amount of content that way but it's not perfect. Sometimes I just prefer to stream, whether it be back catalogue stuff from netflix, or newer shows from elsewhere. I also enjoy letting channels like Sky and Discovery, or Disney for the kids, just play uninterrupted and unaided.

Hard drives fail. Space is at a premium especially on mobile devices. Cloud is the future. Please join us in the 21st century. Local content is so 20th century.
 
Dstv is a good product. The company who owns Dstv are a bunch of bloodsuckers. Although I must say the content and production value of Dstv has improved over time, the product has become too expensive for most to afford, yet they keep hiking the prices. These prices can't compete with ADSL, which gives you the same content, yes even live sport if you know where to look, at much lower prices.

Seems like Couch Potato downloaded it for me a few months ago.
Not a show I've watched yet so I don't know if it's good, but apparently it's front page news at "whats-on-netflix.com"

(Kinda too busy watching Extant, Utopia, Tyrant and catching up on Game of Thrones)
Not sure if those are on netflix but I'm sure you'll enjoy From Dusk till Dawn the tv show... it seems like they are excited about it?

Only a month away then you can watch it. ;)

Don't think you read your own ad properly.

The entire season will be available in one go. Which is brilliant. All Netflix created shows are the same. There is no waiting weekly. That's a stupid hang up from old style television that needs to die.

Even when I used to torrent I'd only start watching something once the season was done. That's how it should be.

Edited my post too late - Yes it's the entire season but my point is a show I've had ready to go on my Plex for over 3 months now is only coming to Netflix for you in August lol
That show is old, how can it be front page news for whats-on-netflix.com? ugh...

Edit: I'm not saying Netflix is crap, it's definitely an improvement over DSTV since it's on demand and there are no ads. I'm just saying sickbeard is beter.

No need to pay extra to have a fast enough connection.
No need to worry about adsl going down when you want to watch something.
No need to worry about buffering or quality drops.
No need to settle for SD quality on lower speed lines.
No need to worry about multiple users watching movies simultaneously.
No need to spoof your country location.
No need to jump through hoops trying to actually pay Netflix.
No need to watch old shows.
No need to switch Region settings to watch stuff only available in another country.
No need to ever ask yourself "Is this content actually available?"

TL;DR: Sickbeard is cheaper, has better video quality with no buffering issues, allows multiple viewers, and has more and newer content.

But sickbeard isn't better.

How many thousands have you spent on hard drive space?
What happens when you get a hard drive failure?
What about when you get the wrong torrent and it has audio sync issues?
What about when you download the wrong torrent and it's in the wrong language?
What about when you download the wrong torrent and it's a cam rip labeled as 720p?
What about when you download the wrong torrent and it has subtitles that can't remove?

With Netflix I can watch it on almost any device without needing terabytes of storage that could die at any moment.
With Netflix I don't have to wait for things to download, as you will on your slow line. Just click and play.
With Netflix I don't have to search for the correct "uploader" in case I found a crappy one. Everything is great quality.
With Netflix I don't have to search for subtitle files.
With Netflix if I don't have to search for new content. It recommends me shows based on my likes and dislikes.
With Netflix's facebook integration I can see what shows my friends enjoyed.
Netflix remembers where in an episode I was if eskom decides to loadshed.
Netflix even remembers where I was if I watch 100 different series then go back to the first one. No need for a notepad document to keep track of what i have watched and what I haven't.
With Netflix I don't need to ask myself if this available as there's pretty pictures to browse through. Please my sig for more.
With Netflix I don't struggle with kids shows like you do with piracy.
With Netflix documentaries are easier to find than piracy.
With Netflix there's no managing of back ups in case my hard drives die. Just click and play.
Netflix actually pays for it's content so I can actually support the content creators of the shows I enjoy watching.
With Netflix I don't need to worry about naming conventions.
With Netflix there's no copying from hard drive to get what I want only to find there's an episode missing.
Netflix gets shows a season at a time so that there's no weekly wait breaking the flow of the show.
With Netflix there's no worry that old content will not have seeders or dmca takedown notices.
And if I ever need to change Netflix regions there's a site in my sig that let's me know where the content is.
Netflix supports up to 4 streams on the family package. That's more than enough for any one.

Netflix is just so much easier to use. It just works. Click and play. No management from my side. That's how entertainment should be.

Netflix even sends me an email when new content gets added that I might be interested. You just can't beat that.

TL;DR Sickbeard isn't better.

Let's make this simple, because i'm not going to refute 30 odd questions, most of which are non-concerns, or actually already supported (Fancy cover-art/resuming playback/subtitles/recommendations/etc)

Here are the top 5 concerns I have.
1. Can I watch movies immediately after the bluray release and/or TV Shows right after they air?
2. What kind of connection do I need to have, to watch everything in 1080p?
3. Can 2 or 3 people all watch different HD content on different devices simultaneously, without buffering/quality loss?
4. Does it always work, even if ADSL is off/slow/having problems/capped/throttled?
5. Finally, can I watch Game of Thrones with it?

Answer me those (honestly), and I'll answer the top 5 concerns you have with my setup.
That's the best way of settling this debate. :p
 
ADSL+ISP easy comes in the same as DSTV. So Netflix and Sickbeard is only an option for the <1 million that already has to go that route. DSTV just works reliably without any of the above concerns so while I don't agree on the price it's worth rather not spending it on ADSL. The money spent of Netflix goes towards cheapish internet. Fits my needs better than a setup where I would pick shows for entertainment rather than what I actually want to watch.
 
Drive failures not a problem with Windows storage spaces. Had a failure recently and just swapped the drive out.
Firm believer in both Plex Media Server as well as Netflix.
