Fastest booting OS required

Google Chromium got my attention recently when I saw a vid on BBC click

I have an old Mecer Centrino with 1GB ram.

I only need openvnp, ultravnc , teamviewer and browser access on this laptop and nothing else.

Currently running XP.

Could not get Chromium to work on the laptop just yet.
Tried uBuntu and it boots same time as XP.

Want an OS that can boot fast like Chromium or Chrome OS, the thing boots in 7sec!
Any ideas?
 
Chrome OS PC's use SSD's. Any light linux distribution should boot fairly quickly. A reliable sleep mode is more important IMO - why reboot?
 
I use the thing to connect to work every night to check and start backups.

Old laptop so battery does not last very long.
in standby it might be dead by the time i need to use it.
 
Another issue - I have a 3G dongle with Vodacom IS.

I need that to work and connect when the laptop starts.
 
If you're prepared to use the TeamViewer web-access, and don't mind getting your figurative hands dirty, TinyCore linux might be able to do what you need. I've been playing around with it recently, and it boots-up seriously quickly, even from spinning-platters. Not sure about the 3G dongle though. I'll give it a try this evening and let you know.
 
What I'm looking for is:

Very quick boot.
Interface where I can set shortcuts to:
Ultravnc
Teamviewer
VPN into work

So it must pick up my 3G dongle and connect on startup.

That's why a tablet appeals to me, the instant on and off.

Have you tried booting TC of USB stick / CF card or something like that yet?

Not yet, mostly been working in VMs, with a few runs booting from CD. Been working on a posting for a persistent installation with more secure password storage (I'm not happy with the standard recommendations) -- mostly done, so the plan for this evening is (was) to (1) remaster, and (2) boot from USB. No problem though to re-shuffle the plan and test usb boot on an Aspire 1, and see whether I can get a 3G dongle working as well.

Hemps, I'll post a walkthrough if I get it going. In the meantime, maybe give Jolicloud a try. Last version I used was 1.1 (not sure what's current now) -- booted quickly on an Acer Aspire 1 netbook (AOA-150), also had no problems connecting via Vodacom 3G USB dongle.

I'm busy downloading the multicore image to try on USB but damn the download is slow for a 45M image.....

Yo Hemps,
I don't understand why you want to hit the problem with iron :) its like throwing more ram in a box and hoping k@k code will execute faster.

Clearly your backup procedure needs an overhaul.

With a combination of rsync, bash and cron jobs you can eliminate the need for human interaction. You need your evenings man!

If you need help or a bump in the right direction, shout!

They don't boot instantly. They just go out of standy mode quickly and the battery lasts long (well except Windows tablets that can barely last 3 hours).
