well i like my free MSE just fine...

me too....

Nortan is the fastest? seriously? are they on drugs? that thing uses more resources than china. MSE in my opinion does the best job with the least resources.

Symantec funded the production of the report and supplied some of the test scripts.

And Symantec always come first with the free alternatives (which are great) coming second rather than a payed for Symantec competitor. Could the results be any more convenient?

Most of these paid for anti-virus programs have become a unbearable pain. Tons of controls of which I do not even know what they do, and are either different, or named different in each product, and have to be accessed in a different way. Every time I come across thes virus checkers I wonder why people want to spend money on such stuff when there are free alternatives available.

MSE, simple and fast, together with the Windows Firewall which at least is understandable, plus a bit of crcumspection have worked very well for me so far.

ROFL!!! Troll alert. :)
I'm glad you found that amusing! :D You're obviously a victim of Apple's "Mac vs PC" campaign from several years ago, back when PC was still synonymous with "IBM PC", Apple still were still using the PowerPC architecture, AMD were licensing Intel's x86 architecture, and "PC" implied some version of Microsoft Windows.

Nowadays, when I see PC, I understand that to mean "Personal Computer", which nowadays is most likely an AMD64 architecture personal computer, of which Apple are now just one of many manufacturers, which Intel are now licensing as "x86_64", and could be running Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux.

So, I believe my question is valid. Why shouldn't Apple or Linux be listed as options when considering security software for one's personal computer?

guys, i'm getting concerned here....
used to use AVG, and then i was advised to use a firewall as well and then moved to Comodo Internet Security....and this did not receive ONE mention here....
so should i change to MSE or ESET?
havent had any viruses, but am i living with false security here??
we set quite firewall rules blocking everything and allowing exception only...so i'd like to be able to do this still

No Panda in the Poll? it's by far the most thorough anti-virus, little slow on the scan, but I'll take slow and thorough over quick and missing **** anyday. Only use av-comparatives.org otherwise you get stuff like this paid for and scripts supplied by Norton and who comes first?.... weird coincidence. Please check the articles you posting myBroadband and make sure it's stated up front that this is paid for by the winning AV!

It is not just their pre 2010 products that cause endless grief for friends, family and co-workers in my experience. It is ANY of their stuff supplied as bloatware, including 2010 & 2011 products on new laptops... the 1st thing I ask the crying, pleading voice on the other end of the line is "did your new pc come with Nortons pre-installed"... 90% of the time is YES, 95% of the time is spent removing it completely, and then 99% of their problems are solved. They are then instructed to install MSSE for free or purchase NOD32... and voila. Comments like "My laptop feels like a new laptop should", "Wow, everythings just working now" etc always follow.... and somehow, without everything and the kitchen sink that Nortons threw at them, they remain safe on the net and virus free.

So... yes, I am sure that the newer stuff is an improvement over the older stuff, but it is still is pffffffffffffft.

I agree about junk being loaded on new laptop. I usually format them straight away and install a fresh copy of Windows with none of the pre-loaded stuff on it. The latest laptop that I bought didn't have any AV product pre-installed but was still rubbish until I reloaded everything. Installed Norton 360 V 5 after that and everything is smooth.

If you can't afford or don't want to pay for AV software MSE seems to be a nice option that doesn't require much user intervention and it seems to do its job quietly.

Ya I can't believe the amount of crap they put on new laptops, friend of mine just got a new acer, really fancy one and it is soooo slow because of the mountain of crapware installed on it. I feel so sorry for people who don't know better and have to live with that.

Well I read this topic yesterday and decided to look at Eset, I ran the Free online scanners and it found 7 virus traces on two drives totaling 540000+ files. One file on C: drive which is a old Win7 setup used for backup starts in case of emergency. One on D: drive which is my current Win7 setup and the remaining five on old memory stick backup files on both drives. After use of AVG free since Win7 beta days and PC 24/7 on the net thats in my books not bad. All attacks was thus averted. Respect was earned in IMHO. Now to do my sons problematic PC for a check. No anti virus functioning.
