Hey guys, i have an external hdd with alot of stuff on in, i need to change it so that i can copy a 16gb file over to it. Stupid thing says there is no space. So thats why i need to change it to ntfs format.

The problem that i have is.that command prompt says ''the disk is dirty'' and need to do a checkdisk to repair the problem.

I have done it a couple of times and still the drive is dirty.

How els can i get it to work, to change format without loosing data, or just get that 16gb file on the hdd?

The way I would do it is to copy the stuff to computer hdd then format the external to ntfs and then copy everything back again.

The problem is its a video, so splitting it might be a problem.

There is no space on computer, thats the reason i got the external

Why would splitting it into multiple archive files be a problem? Do you still want to be able to play it directly from the external?

Borrow another external somewhere, copy everything over, format yours, copy back.

Go to command prompt. Now type the following:

convert d: /fs:ntfs

In this example, d is the drive letter you want to convert.

For information about optional parameters, type convert /? at the command prompt.

I have tried that, but it they says disk is dirty, i need to run chkdsk. After i ran chkdsk it says everything is okay.then when i do that convert thing i get the same error, disk is dirty

Why would a drive get dirty? Is the file system a mess?
Use the disk clean-up utility to remove unwanted files and read-only system folders. :D

@ DANNLER When you find the solution, please post it here. :)

Just download "EaseUS Partition Master 10.0" it will fix anything with regards to partitions/formatting :)
