we're people, we go where we like. i'm not saying go out and kill all the sharks, but we've fought all kinds of threats from lions, baboons, wolves, mosquitoes, army ants, panthers, cobras, spiders, etc. if it can hurt us, we get rid of it.
there are no rules of nature, it's survival of the fittest. millions of fish have to contend with a shark every day, the shark can contend with us

Im pretty sure the one at 2nd beach would have been a Zambezi, its almost always them in the attacks.
They generally take people in very shallow water.

what is so admirable about keeping a species alive? i mean we've been trying to kill ants and mosquitoes for millions of years, we're failing. i'm not overly attached to pandas or sharks as if they're a pet or live in my back yard

Removing the apex predator and have it supplanted by another predator does not mean balance is maintained.
The scallop industry on America's eastern coast was near collapse due to over fishing of sharks. In their absence rays and skates increased in number and obliterated scallop populations. This affected the livelihood's of people connected to the scallop industry.
The same imbalances have been seen on land. The devastation of wolves in North America had a direct link to the devastation of vegetation. Wolves were removed and coyotes and other small predators moved into the territories formerly occupied by wolves. While they became de facto apex predators in the ''new'' system they could not control the populations of elk and other herbivores, the result being these big herbivores annihilated vegetation to the degree that if the rate of devastation continued the elks would send certain plants into extinction and would ultimately begin starving themselves AND other herbivores.
This idea that apex predators can be removed and that there are no side-effects is rubbish.
