Could be typical of a shark attack; the bite is actually a ''tester''. A lot of attack victims bleed out because the shark grabs them, tastes them and realises, ''No, this does not taste like something I'd eat'', and leaves them. Obviously with a large shark that ''test'' bite is enough to slice you in twain.

Yeah, not an accurate description on my part. Sharks prefer fatty meals, hence seals are a popular source of food.
