COULDN'T FACE THE SCHOOL BULLYING ANYMORE: The Grade 10 pupil returned home early from school, put on his favourite Gospel song on his CD player, and committed suicide by hanging himself
THE stepfather of a 16-year-old boy who committed suicide after being bullied at school is blaming himself for not being there to save him.
Sam Mabuza, 44, found his stepson, David "MoDav" Hlongwane, still breathing as he hanged from a piece of electric chord from the rafters of his room in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the morning, David had left for school as normal.
The Grade 10 pupil returned home later that morning, put on his favourite gospel song on his CD player, and committed suicide.
The reason? He was bullied at school.
David was the victim of a group of four other Grade 10 boys, aged between 18 and 22 years, who picked on him and beat him up at the Soshanguve Secondary School.
On Tuesday, David was attacked during lunch break.
His mother, Sheila Hlongwane, 33, said the group of boys approached him and asked him if his name was "Killer".
He denied this.
However, they attacked him with fists and grabbed him by his clothes ... but he managed to escape to the staff-room.
Sources at the school said he was bleeding and his clothes torn when he entered the staff-room. "The principal arrived and took him away."
The principal intervened by giving both David and his attackers letters instructing their parents to meet at the school the following day.
They all returned to class but after school the group attacked him again.
He managed to run away.
On arrival at home, with his T-shirt torn, David claimed he was tired and wanted to sleep.
He never mentioned the incident at home.
Mabuza, who was off-duty on Wednesday, said he had woken David up after realising he was going to be late for school. "He quickly prepared himself and off he went as usual. I later left to visit my in-laws. I do not know what time David returned home," said Mabuza.
When he returned later that day, Mabuza found his stepson dying.
"I got a fright of my life after opening the door and found him hanging from the rafters.
"He was still breathing when I cut off the electric wire with a side cutter and quickly arranged transport to rush him to clinic. Unfortunately, he was certified dead on arrival."
Mabuza partly blamed himself for walking home instead of catching a local taxi.
"Had I not tried to save R7 in taxi fare by walking the remaining distance home, possibly I could have arrived in time to save his life."
After David's death, his parents met with the four boys and their parents. Sheila said all boys confirmed having attacked David.
Reginald Maganxa, chairman of the school's governing body, confirmed the incident.
Charles Phahlane of the Gauteng department of education said: "We will investigate circumstances around the (assault) incident." - Additional reporting by Sipho Masombuka
