Favourite coffee

I tried a chemex the other day and I really liked it. You can taste the bean and you don’t need to add milk. Thinking to get one.

I have been trying to master pour over coffee for the past 4 months (yay lockdown?), so I can give some insight re: the Chemex. For the record, I am cycling between the Chemex 6 cup, Kalita Wave 185, Hario V60 01 plastic and the Hario V60 02 ceramic.

The Chemex is a bit different than others due to the filters, they are much thicker than all the other filters that I have used. To top that, you also triple fold them on the one side. The drain rate is quite a bit slower than V60 and the filtration seems to remove quite a bit more of the oils.

I am not particularly a fan of it though, the coffee becomes a bit tea-like in mouthfeel. The brewer and filter combo is also prone to stalling, especially if your grinder produces many fines. With the Hario Skerton, I could never get a good (for me anyways) cup out of medium/city roast beans. Every now and then I have to lift the filter because some weird vacuum forms, that prevents water from flowing. I have tried all sorts of tricks, like leaving in a chopstick etc to prevent a seal. Still happens now and then. It is a very pretty thing though.

I guess one nice thing of the Chemex is that you can dump and run with all the water using a normal kettle. The other pour over methods are far nicer with a gooseneck pouring kettle.

I am having better luck with the Comandante C40 though, amazing grinder. Expensive, but way more pleasant than using the Skerton. In the end the grinder is probably the most important thing, after getting some good quality coffee.

Quaffee have some decent priced single and blend origin coffee/beans from Africa and S America...they can grind to your requirements as well and deliver ( free of charge if fairly local )

I can recommend them.
We got our second order delivered yesterday, went for the same as last time as we enjoyed them so much. Half a kg each of La Piramide and Los Naranjos beans, both Colombian, such deliciousness. R250 each, and we are in the free delivery R500 or more area. We alternate after about a week on each. Next time we will try something different, perhaps back to the ASOrganics which we have had before and really liked.

I have been using Quaffee (and known Warren) for 15/6 odd years - superb coffee, the most precise guy you will ever meet and always happy to offer advice and help. At the moment we are finishing off his supply of La Rocca.

If you get the chance, stop by the roastery at Buiten and have a chat.

I am jealous, the Nicaraguan La Roca was amazing. His new Nicaraguan is also good, but the La Roca was something special.

Agreed - Warren sent me an early taster roasted by someone else - decent. I took 500gr of his roast in my last order and have found it very hard ti get consistent. Nor crazy about the almond type finish either. Having said that, he did not really like the La Rocca, and we have loved it. May need to find something else to try when the green La Rocca I paid for is gone.

Have you tried Portland Projects’s Nicaraguan? Bit pricey though.

Anyone know if the Nespresso welcome offer is available here too? Link is currently inactive on their site but still mentioned in the Ts&Cs

Older than 4 weeks is basically stale, so I hope not older than that.

Yeah, also the fun not to use them when you self roast before they are ready. I've taken a break from that and ordering other brands to expand on what I normally drink/self roast.

Can anyone recommend decent Nespresso compatible pods? I've tried the Cafféluxe but they are a bit **** - doesn't fill the full cup!
