I am totally sick and tired of Telkom. I would like to get rid of my landlines. But what about faxing? Is there a way or a service that I can use to send and receive faxes over gprs/3G?

A GPRS/3G modem is just that, a way to connect your PC to the outside world, just like any other dial-up, ISDN, ADSL, etc.

With the correct software you can send and receive faxed directly from your PC via the data card or phone modem And help save a rain forrest somewhere. :)

Thanks vodacom3g,

Currently, I give my land line no. to clients and they send me a fax.

What no. do I give them when I only have one of your 3g cards, NO MORE telkom and no more conventional fax machine?

Where does the fax go when my PC is switched off?

Any software suggestions, anyone?

Sorry for all the questions, but its surprizing how little people actually know about these things. I'm the worst. My brother got tired of my questions, so he introduced me to the Forum...

Thanks again.

I'm currently using a email2fax service [http://www.email2fax.co.za which is basically free until you want to send faxes. Also try here : http://www.webmailfax.co.za/ <-- this one gives you a free fax incoming number, and you buy credits [like with skype] for sending faxes. I've used a few times to receive faxes, works good.

Service basically gives you a 0860xxx number. People fax to that number and you get it in your email as a TIF attachment. To send faxes you email to an email adress and it's forwarded to a fax machine.

Of course this has nothing to do with 3G/GPRS, and as you can imagine all received faxes will sit in my email box [whether i'm online or not]. Although i'd also like to know how you would do it via datacard [and if one need to be online to receive etc etc]

Thanks diabolus,

I'll check those sites out, maybe vodacom3g can give us some more info on their data card. Man, I'm tempted to get one of those!

Cost to 0860? Good question. I'll find out. My current ISP uses 0860 number. Maybe that's the reason I'm sucked dry every month...

According to my contact at the telkom call centre a connection to a 0860 no. costs the std. 59,4c for the first 89 secs, and 40c/min there after. :)

Any 086 number that's not 0860 is quite expensive.
At http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page?_pageid=1378,99347&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
you can calculate the cost. 0862 numbers for example cost R2.02 per minute regardless of where you are calling from. A similar price applies to 0867.
0866 cost R2.02 as well.

On 0861 numbers the customer pays for the call - if the number terminates locally it costs the same as a local call, if the number terminates long distance you pay for a long distance call.

Bottom line, if the number is not 0860 or 0800, be careful.
And if you happen to find a 0800 dial up number, please let me know!

Another thought for the forumites to dissect and analyse.

The data card has a normal mobile number. Can't you fax directly to it, or use the added fax services on top of this?

So the 3g card is like a cellphone without a keypad and display?

Cellphones can handle more than one call. But I have never dialed two numbers at the same time. Received yes. I.E: Surfing and faxing at the same time? Receiving a fax while surfing?

What if the PC is not powered up? Does the fax still go to a memory on the vodacom network?

These questions... :(

Here's the costs of the service i mentioned above [Since i don't actually WANT people to send me faxes i'm not really concerned about what it will cost -them- to go through the schlep of sending me something they could've email to me].

* FREEFAX Number can only receive calls from within South Africa. International callers will not be able to send you fax. Calls to FREEFAX numbers are charged at R1.77 per minute (ex VAT).

So yes, THe R2,02 mentioned earlier is about right with VAT etc.

I handle import/exports from time to time. Specifically the reason I need Fax. Banks prefer faxing aswell. I have not received any authentic documents for signature through e-mail yet, except if they only required my signature. Afterwards I have to fax them. I'm not allowed to scan them and e-mail.

So, international access to fax is a must.

Does telkom remain the only sollution?

0861 is called maxicall i.e. you pay the national tariff irrespective where the call terminates.

I heard (somewhere) that on certain 0861+ numbers you can tell telkom what you want the calls to cost - you get the money above telkom's tariff.. (hence R8/min calls)

My phone (std gprs) is picked up as a modem when I plug it in to my PC, then I simply tell the fax software to send the fax through my phone "modem". BUT, to receive a fax on MTN I need to request a new (fax) number, which people can then use to send faxes to me through my phone to my PC. BUT! Since I have not tried it yet, I dont know what happens to the fax if my phone is not plugged into my PC at that time.

Would be interesting to know if the datacard can handle 3G and fax calls at the same time!?

Apparently you can receive faxes just like voicemail. You just give out your faxmail number instead of your voice number. So when the fax is sent, it goes directly into the faxmail box instead of your phone. On MTN the faxmail number is 083 118 and the rest of your cell number. Then you can retrieve the faxes whenever you want. This should be available internationally too.

Most likely Vodacom has a similar service.

I use my fax "mail box", but I suppose receiving faxes through a phone/modem to your PC works a bit different. - I have to plug my PC into a telscum line to download the fax.
