In an ongoing fashion to try and satisfy all your product enhancement requests, the usage notification to an alternate number went live last night.

You need to SMS to 123 from your data SIM and use the keyword and parameter ALTNUM <alternate MSISDN>, where <alternate MSISDN> would typically be your normal telephony MSISDN or where-ever you want the usage alerts to go to.

This is currently for CDB's.

Feedback, as always, please.

 :)

I was planning to buy another PPDB on 2007-09-29, but I think I will wait until 2007-10-01 and instead buy an Ad-Hoc CDB to test this out, can I send the SMS to 123 now from my 4U Contract SIM card even without an active CDB, and can I send it from my 4U TwinCall SIM card or must I use the primary 4U contract SIM card to send the SMS from?

Rather use the primary number, don't tempt fate!

Should work without a CDB.

Yes tried/set it last night. Q : Should it have given any response ? I still unfortunately have a fair amount of my CDB available, so I will not get a notification for a while. I assume the "<" ">" are just parameter indicators ?
eg

ALTNNUM 0821234567

Wait. I'm slow today. :)

So I SMS from my contract data sim: ALTNNUM 082XXXXXXX to 123 - to receive usage alerts on my normal phone number 082XXXXXXX?

Will try tonight. (Why the extra N in ALTNNUM? :))

Tried it, sent the SMS as instructed but got no information back except confirmation that the message was delivered.

Is it mandatory that the Alternate MSISDN must be a Vodacom Number? I'm asking becoz the Alternative Number is just that... an alternative number/way to recieve the notification.

Have to say that I think this great new alternative notification number feature for contract data customers, is rendered utterly useless and pointless due to the total lack of near-realtime contract data usage monitoring by Vodacom's rearend systems, sad but true :(.

@v3g, any news on the ETA of contract data migrating over to the pre-paid data systems?Implicitly yes, an Alternative [Vodacom] Number to which data-related notification SMSes can be sent.

Not quite fair, I think...:)

The alternate number service would be required even if the real-time notification is in place. No fixed ETA yet, but the work is in progress.

Personally i would prefer an email rather than sms.

And i cannot believe that it takes that much rocket science that when a certain pint of data usage is reached that it triggers an email which sends the info.

Rather useless, then.

All my voice contracts are with MTN, I selected Vodacom's 3G because of the better coverage ...

I would prefer this as well, although one should be able to select one or the other, or both.

Anything related to customer feedback seems to be rocket science in this country

The exception is this forum, to be fair!

Is it mandatory that the Alternate MSISDN must be a Vodacom Number?.

According to Vodacom it can be any valid cell (local ?) number. Just got this in a letter from Vodacom (SP)

Send an SMS from the Vodafone Mobile Connect Software as follows: SMS "altnum 0xx xxxxxxx" (last 9 digits of the alternate cellphone number you wish your notifications to be sent to) to 123. NOTE: the 10 digit cellphone number specified does NOT have to be on the Vodacom network.

This part is a bit worrying though as I did not recieve this

An activation notification message will then be sent to your specified alternate cellphone number

:)
