I'm in Dubai on business, and this afternoon I was in Carrefour (a *huge* hypermarket) and I picked up a 500 GB Seagate external hard drive for 479 dirhams...that's just about R1000.

Not too shabby! Most electronics here are very well priced. Can't say the same for a lot of other things though (like ice cream).

Seems pretty expensive to me but if you're happy. ;)

I'd be kicking myself personally..... :p

If you meant 500GB, well done. :)

btw, a friend said this guy at work (I didn't believe the story) can get a 1TB ext HDD for R650. Could this possibly be true, I haven't looked at those prices for ages.

Someone told me they can get an external 500GB for R250ex vat ... where, where, where????

Which model? The oddly shaped FreeAgent?

That's less than R950 which is a really good price. In fact it appears to be cheaper than the same product in Hong Kong if I'm looking at the right drive - Seagate 500GB ST305004FDC1E1-RK External HDD HK$ 1,145.00 from Jumbo (http://www.jumbo-computer.com/pricelist.asp?ProductTypeCode=HDD).

@TheCynick: If you can drag yourself away from drinking cocktails around the pool at the Burj Al Arab and do some shopping please post the details if you find any any cheap computer hardware or cell phone suppliers in the souks in Dubai as well as websites if possible. What is the broadband situation like over there at the moment? A few years ago it wasn't much better than ours from what I remember. Etisalat was their local version of Telkom.

How are you going to clear that through customs?

Thats easy ... firstly if you went with a laptop, you could chuck the box, put some files on it and say you didn't think you needed to clear it with the laptop.
Also ... you are given a limit to how much value you can import, I think it is R2000 ... maybe R3000 ... and I think it is rands, it might be $2000/$3000
Also, just walk casually like you couldn't care less and you'll prob just walk right past them ... just don't bring in craploads of electronics, thats all.

Take whatever you have like your zippo or bottle of wine or whatever odd thing, go to the "To Declare" section and ask the guy if you need to declare your Zippo. He says no, and you walk right through missing even the whole "nothing to declare" queue. That works for me. ;)

I've been to Dubai thrice in the past 18 months. Whilst Carrefour does have some items at good prices (picture PnP Hypermarket, with better brands) and you can find some good deals in their Sale Season (isn't that on now?), I was not impressed at all with their retail prices.

From what I've heard the prices of duty-free chocolates at the airport seem to be very good though.

Yep, correct! That's the best way to spend those left-over dirhams, heh-heh.

:D
