I realise this may be a strange question for a forum that is clearly male dominated, but are there any here who have experience with the female condom?

I recently had my contraceptive implant removed and my SO and I are investigating which type of contraceptive will be best. Pills, injections and latex condoms are all out of the question for a variety of reasons, so female condoms seems the best bet.

Any experience here?

If there's an allergy re: latex condoms you do get a different make/model :D

I think the pill is still the most effective. Just don't start blaming your weight gain on it ;)

You get allergy-free condoms. Female condoms are latex too. And not as reliable AFAIK. But, um, ask your gynie

Why would pills, injections and latex condoms all be out? I'm struggling to find a common denominator between them all...

I didnt realise they were also latex. Bummer :/

To get to a gynie in this country you have to get a referral from your house doctor first and even then they will only send you if its something they feel is out of their knowledge realm. The (female) GP I spoke to blushed bright red and said 'as an adult we all have to find what works best for us' and ended the conversation. I was like '.... thanks?'.

No man. Just call a gynie and make an appoinment. I've even made one for my wife, no issues.

He did say they were out for a variety of reasons.

You'd have to have a whole host of issues to rule all of the various types of pills, various injections and latex condoms out. Lupus?

1. Never heard of needing a referral before. Just ask your friends to recommend a good one and make an appointment.
b. Get a new GP. Seriously. That's ridiculous.

Are you sure it wasn't bring your daughter to work day, at her rooms?

I'm also interested to know why all the other forms of contraceptives are ruled out...

Think certain Medical Aids need the referal letter. And most of the times the Gynaes that have long waing lists are Othe ones that deal with births as well.

And Mooks put your big girl panties on and go see a good Gynae and really consider geting a new Gp too

Well, latex allergy means no "normal" condoms; injections & implant both gave my hormones such a shock that instead of the average 28 day cycle, I would have a 3-6 day cycle. For 3years. My sex life was taking a real knock :'( & when I was on the pill (from age 17 - 23/24ish) I was on a perma-pregnancy scare because I never remembered to take the stupid thing half the time.

So, taking my lifestyle & my relationship status into consideration (long distance relationship etc etc) we agreed that condoms are the way to go. We are just weighing up the diff between the non-allergy male condoms or the female condom.

I feel so much closer to all of you today ....
