Maranello kick-starts shift to electrification with a hybridised, mid-engined McLaren rival

Ferrari will reveal its second ever hybrid model tomorrow, according to a preview image posted on the firm's Twitter feed.

The sketch, showing a silhouette of the forthcoming supercar's rear end, bears the slogan 'Dare to Imagine' and confirms the official debut date.

The sketch highlights four square brake lights and a pair of sizeable exhaust tips protruding from the centre of the rear bumper, bearing a remarkable resemblance to last year's 488 GTB-based SP38 concept.

Rumours suggest the new supercar will pack a mid-mounted 3.9-litre V8, mated to three electric motors for a combined power output of 973bhp. It will serve as a rival to McLaren's forthcoming new hybrid supercar, which was recently spotted carrying out preliminary tests ahead of its launch next year.

Ferrari has previously confirmed plans to launch a new downsized V6 alongside a range of hybrid models. Michael Leiters, Ferrari's technical chief, said: “V6 is the next step to follow downsizing without losing emotion or speed of the car.”

Ferrari will reveal its second ever hybrid model, the SF90 Stradale, today (Wednesday).

The model's SF90 tag, confirmed by a trademark site, is shared with the current Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 car and celebrates 90 years since the formation of the racing division in 1929. Stradale is Italian for 'road going'.

Ferrari SF90 Stradale

Ferrari introduced a new chapter in its history with the introduction of its first series production PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), the SF90 Stradale. The new model is extreme on every level and represents a true paradigm shift, because it delivers unprecedented performance for a production car. Figures such as 1,000 cv, and a weight-to-power ratio of 1.57 kg/cv, and 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h not only put the Ferrari SF90 Stradale at the top of its segment, but also mean that a V8 is the top-of-the-range model for the first time in the marque's history.

The car's name encapsulates the true significance of all that has been achieved in terms of performance. The reference to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari underscores the strong link that has always existed between Ferrari's track and road cars. A brilliant encapsulation of the most advanced technologies developed in Maranello, the SF90 Stradale is also the perfect demonstration of how Ferrari immediately transitions the knowledge and skills it acquires in competition to its production cars.

The SF90 Stradale has a 90° V8 turbo engine capable of delivering 780 cv, the highest power output of any 8-cylinder in Ferrari history. The remaining 220 cv is delivered by three electric motors, one at the rear, known as the MGUK (Motor Generator Unit, Kinetic) due to its derivation from the Formula 1 application, located between the engine and the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission on the rear axle, and two on the front axle. This sophisticated system does not, however, make for a more complicated driving experience. Quite the opposite, in fact: the driver simply has to select one of the four power unit modes, and then just concentrate on driving. The sophisticated control logic takes care of the rest, managing the flow of power between the V8, the electric motors and the batteries.

SF90 Stradale hybrid is most powerful Ferrari road car yet

Plug-in hybrid packs 986bhp, courtesy of a V8 and three electric motors, and is faster than the LaFerrari around Fiorano

Ferrari has unveiled the most powerful, most advanced and fastest-accelerating road car it has ever produced: the SF90 Stradale.

Described as a “milestone in Ferrari’s history” by CEO Louis Camilleri, the new flagship model is also the first series-production plug-in hybrid Ferrari. It's the second of five new models to be presented this year - an “unprecedented” product rollout, according to the Italian firm.

“2019 is the year in which we have decided to significantly increase our product portfolio,” said Camilleri. "This [car] is the first step in a direction that Ferrari will enter in unwavering focus and confidence”.

Dubbed Project 173 during development, the production name is taken from the firm’s 2019 Formula 1 car and in turn references 90 years since Scuderia Ferrari was founded. Unlike with the LaFerrari, production is limited only to the amount the firm can sell, with 2000 customers from around the world lined up to see it tonight.

Engine and performance

The most significant number for the SF90 Stradale is 1000. That's the total horsepower figure (986bhp) that the petrol-electric powertrain makes: 36bhp more than the LaFerrari's and the most of any roadgoing Ferrari ever built.

The heart of the car is Ferrari’s award-winning ‘F154’ twin-turbocharged V8, bored out from the 3902cc of the 488 Pista to 3990cc. Engineers claim a complete redesign, including new combustion, intake and exhaust systems, while a narrow cylinder head, with a Ferrari V8 first in a new 350-bar direct injection system, features.

The resulting output of the engine alone is 769bhp, with 590lb ft of torque at 6000rpm. The new engine design, in which the turbocharger is mounted lower and the flywheel is smaller, results in a lower centre of gravity. The exhaust system also makes use of the super-alloy Inconel instead of steel to save weight, while Ferrari claims a “fuller, richer” sound.

All of this results a 0-62mph time of 2.5sec - a record for a roadgoing Ferrari. Furthermore, 0-124mph takes 6.7sec, while the top speed (claimed not to be the main performance focus) is 212mph. Ferrari also says the new car pulls out a 64-metre lead from the LaFerrari in one lap around its Fiorano test track.

New Ferrari SF90 Stradale revealed ... with a whopping 735 kW

Ferrari has finally lifted the covers off its new SF90 Stradale, which arrives as the Prancing Horse brand’s first series production plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. With some 735 kW on tap, it's also the automaker's most powerful road-going model ever (yes, outpunching even the mighty LaFerrari).

The Italian firm says its new model is “extreme on every level” and represents a “true paradigm shift”. Indeed, it’s the first time a V8 finds itself at the top of Ferrari’s range.

Yes, the new SF90 Stradale employs a turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 engine capable of delivering 574 kW (the highest power output of any eight-pot in the brand’s history), with the remainder coming from three electric motors. Peak torque, meanwhile, comes in at 800 N.m.

One electric motor is mounted at the rear (between the engine and the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission), with the other two sited on the front axle. Total vehicle weight comes in at a claimed 1 570 kg (with the hybrid system accounting for around 270 kg).

The SF90 Stradale is also equipped with all-wheel drive, a step Ferrari describes as “necessary to allow the incredible power unleashed by the hybrid powertrain to be fully exploited”. The result is a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 2,5 seconds, with 200 km/h flashing up on the speedometer in just 6,7 seconds. It tops out at 340 km/h.

It doesnt look like a ferrari. it doesnt make me feel like i did when i saw the 458 for the first time.
