The new place is covered by vumatel, but there is no fiber installed in the place yet.

My experience is that every time I had fiber installed they run it to wherever the DSL box was, however in this place (a flat, so no ceiling) I want the fiber to terminate in the study, not the living room.

My question, what is the policy here as to how "complex" the install can be, ie if I want the box to be inside a cupboard in the study, can I request that to be done?

I think you can, but they charge extra per meter beyond a certain length I believe.

Both my vuma installs, I was asked where I would like the box placed.. I was charged the same, irrespective of the length of the run from where the fibre entered my dwelling..

As to in a cupboard thing, should be no issue if the cupboard is easily accessible and does not require extra effort over and above what a 'normal' install would require.. also depends on the installer.. my second installer was very conscious about where I wanted the cpe, how I wanted it placed, where the cable has to run from entering the dwelling etc.. first installer not so much.. asked where the CPE should go and he determined the run from there..

I did this when we renovated our house and the old fibre line was removed, I wasn't charged any extra, I think because where I put the CPE was actually closer to the outside junction box.

Our CPE is in a cupboard located centrally in the house and the fibre runs in electrical conduiting I had installed while we renovated so the fibre is only 'exposed' in our roof.

They asked. I pointed. They installed. No issues - was well within the 30m allotted to me though. They reported that they used 30m of fibre - I suspect this was a lie, in order to get the 'maximum' from the install.

Do u have a socket electrical or telephone already in the cupboard?
If not, it's not possible to do concealed wiring easily. If u are ok with them running a conduit externally then it should be pretty easy

I think u are forgetting it's a flat and not a house.
In a house they can just get into the roof, drill a hole in the ceiling and drop the wire anywhere u want. This is not possible in a flat.

I am not forgetting that.. my first install was in a flat, where I told them to install CPE in what was my study the furthest room in the back of the flat, the second in my current house..

The installer will ask where you want the CPE.. if the installer thinks your preferred location is not possible, they would inform you..

How did they lay the fiber cable ? Was it concealed or they just ran a cable from the main door ?

Hot glued into corner of the ceiling and wall from the point of entry at the front door all the way to the study entrance, where they drilled a small hole to get the cable to the other side, still going along the corner of wall and ceiling to my chosen location, where they dropped it down one of the corners of the study to the skirting and along skirting to the CPE..

That makes sense. I was assuming that OP wants the wire to be concealed.
For concealed wiring u have to use the existing conduits available in the apartment.

There is a light in the study (ie a ceiling light) I wonder if they can run it from wherever they enter the flat to some plug and then get to the light and then just from there run to the cupboard?

I am probably missing the plot entirely, as I have no idea how the wiring in a flat works (where the existing conduits are and are not) and what is and is not possible

I was lucky that i did not have any cornice yet, which I then later installed and the cable vanished.. still, the cable i had installed was white and around 3mm thick.. you paint over that and you would be unlikely to spot it very easily..

It depends on the layout of the flat. If the duct comes from the ground up and the termination box is located in the kitchen they would likely not install to other rooms.

In a house you can pretty much choose where you want it but a flat it depends on the duct and where that is. If there is no duct and they have to run the cable against the wall for example then it should not be an issue.

The contractor that is installing should be the best person to advise.

No.. that they won't and can't do.. they would most likely hot glue along a skirting or against the bottom of the cornice (if you have) or in the corner of the wall and ceiling..

The installers have pre-terminated cable lengths. So if e.g. 20m is too short, and 30m too long, they'll use 30m and coil the excess somewhere. I have a nice coil of fibre on my ceiling as a result. (Guess it will also depend what they have on hand on the day?)
