I will soon be getting Fiber installed by Axxess. They only offer a Zyxel NBG-418N V2 router option for R699. I have not had any experience with Zyxel and the router does not have a USB port which I would really prefer. Axxess does have a more expensive Zyxel router as well which does have a USB port but also many other functions I would not use and it is over R2000 which is a bit steep

I would prefer to use a brand of router which I know of. Preferably tplink but otherwise happy with Asus, Netgear or Billion

I am not 100% sure how Fiber connects. From what I have read it is simply using a standard RJ45 ethernet cable but something would need to dial the connection. Does this mean any router with a WAN port will suffice? Or does it specifically need to have Fiber capabilities

Have any of you used the Zyxel router and can let me know how well it works or can anyone advise on any alternatives.

Zyxel sucks. Stay the hell away.

I bought a R1.8k Zyxel SBG3300-N when I got fibre. It has the worst user interface of any router on Earth.

Looking at web africa website the tplink they offer is the AC1750 at R2199

the AC 1750 is a beast of a router though.

Why not just spend that little extra on the Billion i posted. Im not sure how far you want to stretch on budget, but the Fibre routers i gather is a bit more expensive than your normal DSL ones

I would really love to get the AC1750 but it is a bit of a hefty price
But I would definately get the Billion over the Zyxel if there are no other alternatives. I currently use a Billion 7300NX for my ADSL and never had any issues. I prefer TP-Link interfaces but Billion does get the job done

... how is the AC1750 a Fibre capable router, I can either hang off a standalone router or act as a ADSL router hookup via the RG11 port.

I got one at home and use it as my WiFI AP, I use a Draytek Vigor 2760 as my VDSL router.

You set it up the same as ADSL, username and password and its RJ45 into router, but you need a VDSL router, try get your hands on a TP-Link, they are very good routers / AP's.

.. for the AC1750 to act as a router... it gets the line via the RG11, if you connecting it via the RG45 then it's just a AP.

Making note to go check router when i get home.

.. NOTE I'm sure the AC1750 is ADSL/ADSL2 only, which max's out at 24Mbps.

VDSL and higher you will need something else.

Don't make mistake, I love my AC1750 as a Wifi AP.

correcting myself, the back of the unit, no RG11, only a RG45 uplink,

note, the 24Mbmps via the Internet port is still applicable by way of the ADSL/ADSL2 protocol support. the 1Gb ports 1-4 is 1Gb and the Wifi is 450Mbps capable.
