One we have the other we dont?

Fiber - if we had it as an alternative to ADSL - would be capable of faster speeds.

Fiber is a communications medium while ADSL is a communications standard. Fiber is (currently) the fastest medium we have to transmit network signals on. ADSL can be used over Fiber, but in SA there is not that much of it installed, so we use ADSL over copper wire. In the US most new property developments are being set up with Fiber to the curb (FTTC) or Fiber to the house (FTTH) as standard which is slowly starting to take trend here as well.

Most of our back bone infrastucture is made up of fiber yet our last mile uses copper. In fact with Telkom they have only just figured out how to terminate a fiber to ADSL because traditionally your last mile had to be copper for the service to work.

doesn't IS offer ADSL over Fiber or something with very good pings?
I was under the impression that was just to differentiate it from their standard international ADSL traffic that travels via satellite?

AFAIK everything else available in the ADSL arena (SAIX and Verizon) would be de-facto 'adsl over fiber' because it uses SAT3.

Like I said thats just my impression so if I'm way off base feel free to set me straight. :)

pretty academic discussion in south africa. By the time south africa gets fibre to home most of us will wearing adult diapers :)
