Hi everyone, Telkom just phoned me to ask if I wanted to upgrade my ADSL line speed.... so I asked if fibre was available in our area and they said yes. My question is do I go with Telkom and what speed do I go for or is there another SP that's better? I still need a landline for telephone. Please advise. Thanks guys.

The most important question before answering, is where you are.

Link Africa has been deploying around Pear Lane and Silverhurst Estate and moving into Constantia Village area right now. The best service providers, such as Vox are typically cheaper via Link Africa than via Telkom - depending on whether or not you are prepared to wait.

If you actually sign up it speeds up deployment.

I would recommend Vox Telecom (currently on their gigabit package, expect an article on MyBB soon :D ). However, like Chris said the deployment is limited. Link Africa are busy using trenching where they can until the city approves their sewer method (likely within the next month).

Still happy with Vox? Had the sales rep come do a site inspection yesterday and just waiting on the forms so I can sign up. Also going for the gigabit package...itching to try.

And what modem did they install for you?

One thing to consider is that most/all ADSL accounts work on Telkom Fibre. They've been very successful in Bishopscourt, and have better coverage in Constantia now than Link Africa with many live areas. Constantia has notorious internet/telephone problems due to the poor quality of the copper. Fibre is rock solid.

Telkom FTTH is a ball and chain. 24 month contracts, IPC backbone and of course the awful experience and pricing that is Telkom.

Waiting a bit longer is definitely worth it.

Yeah, probably more cons than pros, just a pity Link Africa are taking longer because of all the hold ups, and then Telkom can go in and start deploying speedily. I read on the group that it's possible to not do contracts? It wasn't conclusive though.

I contacted VOX in April last year (via the Constantia FTTH website). I did receive acall from them, but despite promising I'd be kept up to date, I've heard nothing further from them.

Again submitted my details via the Frogfoot website on 1 April this year. Still nothing received from them. Seems that VOX has non-existant customer service. If they can't be bothered signing up new customers, I don't know how they treat existing customers. If they're not interrested in taking my money, will have to go with someone else.

The hold ups are actually over. CoCT have finished their long, bureaucratic mess and LA is going ahead with the (fairly fast) sewer method.

Call their FTTH office and ask for Luzanne. She is very, very diligent. 087 805 0990

Thanks Jack, will give her a call as soon as they come closer to my zone.
