Anyone recently install fibre in the area? How long did you wait from the time you applied up to the point they finished the installation? I recently(14/10/16) applied through Webafrica with basically no response. Only info I got was that it can take up to 10 weeks...

HI All
Telkom was standing on the corner of Paul and Wekker streets yesterday. Myself and several other people put our names on a list, hopefully this will assist in getting fiber quicker in to Moreleta Park and the complexes. If you do see them please go and add your name so that we can get the numbers as high as possible. Thank you.

Hi Carl,

We had a chat with them a couple of weeks ago - finally got Telkom to install into our complex. They have been busy for the last 3 weeks with the installation. Not sure how long they still going to be before the line will be live though. Hopefully not too long now...

HI Brad

Thank you for the feedback, I'm in Plumbago. In which complex are you?

If you're in a complex, try getting in touch with the Telkom GCS (Gated Community Services) guys - see here.
I'm not sure what their "minimum subscribers" criterion might be, but give it a shot. Be warned that it takes some persistence - these guys are not always easy to pin down.

Hi Carl,

Stay in Mabula, just up the road from Plumbago. Started about 3 weeks ago - but the feedback we have been getting from the guys installing is the pipes are blocked. They have been replacing the pipes while building the manholes for the fibre to be pulled through. They have indicated they should start pulling the actual fibre through either this week or early next week.

@jcheek - Thank you for the feedback, I'm already in contact with planners from Openserve/Telkom. Our complex have submitted the required documentation.

@BradPM - thanks for the info.

Telkom did my installation on Saturday. I am working through M-Web who logged the request with them. It took approximately 3 weeks from when I applied to being installed - though I was advised it could be up to 45 working days :erm: . Now I am just waiting for M-Web to ship my router.

Installation took about 90 minutes but the pole is right in the back of my yard and the placement inside my house is closeby so not a long distance.

Telkom did a speed test after installing and it showed 97Mbps download and 62Mbps upload speeds.

Excellent, thanks for the response Krugie! Can you post some pictures? I was contacted by Openserve on Monday (24th) to say a technician will be conducting my fibre installation the following day (25th) needless to say nobody showed up. It has only been 2 weeks since I applied and I was told it may take up to 10 weeks so I am still relaxed.

Same thing happened to me. Applied last week through Webafrica. Got a call yesterday to say the techie will come install my fibre today.....I'm still waiting. I knew it too good to be true.

I'm more upset at the fact that I took a day off from work to accommodate them.

Would it be possible to provide your street names that has active fibre in Moreleta?

I am currently in Frhensch Street. Huawei has been pulling in fiber for the past 2 weeks, DFA has a main line in Frhensch according to this http://www.dfafrica.co.za/coverage/ however no provider has yet confirmed that our street is active, applied through Webafrica, on their map the whole Moreleta Lit up like an Ebola outbreak en now after a month, its still in the planning stages and doesn't even show the rest of the active locations in Moreleta...Would be great if anyone can confirm their street name near Frhensch so that I can try and apply pressure ,or move my existing order to another ISP.

Hey Steens, I am in Milligal - very close to Frhensch street. The fibre is active just waiting for Openserve technician to come and do the installation to the house. Did you check the Telkom map (https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/ucm/#) if your house falls under the purple highlighted area? Quite a large piece of Frhensch street still not active, will be very soon though. Good luck!

Hi Guys

When looking for a Fibre Router, do you need to look for something fibre specific or is it the WAN Ethernet port that you plug in?
I hear they install some connection in your house which converts the fibre to a WAN ethernet port.
Almost something like using a ADSL modem in bridged mode to your WAN port in your PPOE enabled router?
So any router with WAN port will actually do? Like any of the asus RT-* routers (rt-ac3200)?

Thx!

Pretty much any general-purpose router with an RJ-45 WAN port on its upstream side will work, provided it can open a PPPoE connection over that WAN port.

Yip, that's the Optical Network Terminal (ONT). See this post for an idea of what the bits look like and read on from there.

Many of the fibre ISPs will supply you with a "free" router that does the job, but it's often not the best. If you already have a good router, stick with it.
Even your existing ADSL modem/router may be worth keeping, if it fits the bill as above.
On some newer "fibre-ready" xDSL routers, there is a separate WAN port that can be fed from another type of broadband modem/router device, like a fibre ONT, or an LTE modem/router. On others, one of the downstream LAN ports is actually a dual-purpose LAN/WAN port than can be configured as an inbound WAN port. On some older xDSL routers, a firmware upgrade can turn one of the downstream LAN ports into a dual-purpose LAN/WAN port.

There seem to be a quicker response time in our area. My fibre installation was completed and activated within a week of placing an order on WebAfrica's website. Also on Lucky Bean Crescent.

So they seems to have just stopped with the installation in our complex. They have laid all the empty pipes throughout the complex, just now nothing.
