Fibre in Ramsgate

yeah it's still too high for me, so I'm going to keep on with my Supersonic LTE for the remainder of the two years until hopefully they start dropping prices and / or doing speed doubling for free
Ja I found the cheapest I think was R573 and a 400 installation fee on the 10 down and 10 up package monthly

guys what do you think about the packages?a tad too expensive i think seeing that people on openserve network with Mweb are paying R499 for 20 up and 20 down and they have just recieved free upgrades to 25 up and 25 down and they are phasing out the 10Mbps and 20Mbps services.

If you're talking about Frogfoot, they were and still is actually amongst the cheap ones, before Openserve slashed their prices.

Not too long ago, ISP's were still shaping and applying FUP's on Openserve Fibre.

Bit of a throwback

RNM INTERVENES ON THE CATASTROPHE CAUSED BY OPTIC FIBRE CABLE INSTALLATION COMPANY

The Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has taken drastic steps to address the challenges caused by the optic fibre cable installation company following a series of damages to either electricity cables or water pipes or to the road or driveways.

Since the fibre cable installation company started its work in and around Ray Nkonyeni Municipality areas, residents have experienced either power cuts or water supply challenges. In addition, to these challenges, have been damages to the road or driveways and all these have resulted to residents being severely affected and inconvenienced. RNM, Ugu District Municipality and Eskom have all been affected as they have struggled with the turnaround time to restore power or water and even fixing the road due to unplanned and a huge number of damages.

On Friday 12 March 2021, the RNM Senior Management led by the Municipal Manager met with the management of the company and it was agreed that the company will stop all the work up until the latter submits a formal requests to the municipality and then the two parties will have to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) before the work can resume. Key amongst the points in the MOU are:
• The company will have to inform RNM within ten (10) minutes of the damage of the electricity cable or water pipe
• The affected entity (RNM or Ugu District Municipality or Eskom) will then provide the company with the contractor to fix the damaged property or item in order for the supply to be restored and that shall happen
within an hour
• The company will bear the costs of fixing the said property or item
• The RNM where possible, will provide the company with the dangerous areas for the company to avoid when installing the optic fibre cable.

Both parties acknowledged that since this work had started, residents have been badly affected and therefore deserve a sincere apology. The municipality is also of the view that this should have been handled better even before the work was permitted to start and is therefore out of its own accord sincerely apologises to the residents that have been negatively affected. Going forward, no work will be done up until both parties sign a Memorandum of Understanding which will set out means of quickly attending to unintended happenings or incidents. END

It's not like RNM has been doing a stellar job before anyways.

Yeah, saw that on whatsapp. Let me just say that a number of people are pissed off. Looking at my own pavement this is not professional work at all and let me tell you why - they aren't moving from town to town and region to region with their own workforce, they placed local adds and employed unemployed guys who signed up. They are randoms employed to dig.

There's a whole block in Tweni that's been without power for 4 days now because they broke the lines at numerous places. Eskom now has to rewire it and they are not happy.

Also keep in mind that we have a lot of water issues here on the south coast so broken lines creating even more problems are causing people to complain.

Man this thing did a 180 really fast. Nothing to do now but wait and see.

They should have just gone air fibre. Digging on the coast was bound to create issues.

As a fibre network operator you just can't win.

If you don't hire locals, big strike and rollout stops.
If you hire locals and the work standard drops a bit due to less experienced labourers, residence complain rollout stops.

On the other side people demand jobs and the residence wants fast reliable fibre internet but don't want it trenched, don't want it aerial don't want it wireless but they want it.

It's a very hard balancing act I guess. Got to try and keep everyone happy.

Well they closed up, including open trenches where fibre were not installed yet, removed their netting and ****ed off.

I doubt these guys will be back. On whatsapp people are saying Eskom applied for an urgent interdict to stop them dead.

I finally have a fibre line outside my house. I watched them lead it into the trench. And now this?

I am really, really angry now.

I do not think the community will let it slide if they just leave though, the coast is in dire need of new infrastructure regarding connectivity.

They rocked up here again. Exchanged some smokes for some info - its the cleanup crew further cleaning.

However, the chap told me they are now testing what's already installed. Couple of LDV's parked on the corner.

My side of the road is done but sucks for the guys on the other side of the road I guess. That side was not completed yet.

Just shows how fragile this process is.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and another thing I forgot to mention - they are not doing flats and complexes hey, so if any other south coasters down here find themselves in such then best not to get your hopes up just yet.

Good ol' trade system when needed. Thats quite the pitty though, because in some cases the damage to the area was done for no reason, since the installation there is cancelled.

I don't even know if this halt on all fibre installations will affect my link africa bfibre. stuck on that contract now i guess.

Well they finished Sea Park and like 70% of Umtentweni before things went south.

Lets just hope they can clean up their act and come to an understanding with Eskom and the municipality in order to continue and move on to the other areas.

Better supervision will be s start. Been keeping an eye on these guys for weeks now (work from home) and the only times I really noticed supervisors walking the road checking was late afternoons and by that time damage was already done.

Can't they just continue via the aerial route from where it's necessary to at least complete the area they intended to serve?

Well the good thing I have noticed so far is that the coverage map is still being updated and the whole of the coast lit up to yellow as "work in progress".

This morning it was still all as "planned but no eta"

The complex body corp needs to contact them to install.
