So, at the moment I'm sitting with 20MB ADSL2+ and our exchange has been updated to support 40MB VDSL.
At the same time our area is light purple for FTTH.

If I go and get a VDSL modem now, I know that in a week or two fibre will become available. I see some ASUS modems say they are fibre ready, but what does that mean?

I don't want to go and spend cash on a VDSL modem if I wouldn't need the equipment in a month or three, or does it still have a use in a fibre install? Already have wifi access points, so don't need it for that.

20 meg is plenty. Why upgrade to 40 meg?

Just hang onto the 20 meg and wait for fibre. IMO.
