Some good news for the folks on WebAfrica.

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/144479-webafrica-unveils-impressive-new-adsl-data-prices.html

double your data for the same price.

Hawkeye biena at work again ;)
Well spotted!

"Webafrica’s Telkom fibre-to-the-home customers will also benefit from the cap increases."

Seems it's true, and for both ADSL and FTTH customers, yes.

Before (ie last month):

After (ie this month):
20151102_WebAfrica console snapshot 2 (Small).JPG

Not quite double in my case, but 66% extra daytime data for the same price is still very nice :D

1TB of night-time data sure sounds impressive .. though I for one will never even get close to using it all !

Ah reread their press release, "up to double". silly me :p

So it looks like customers are being given the next step. Probably consolidating their offerings.
60 -> 100GB

Not at all!

Yeah, previously it was 40, 60, 90, 120 etc GigaBytes per month, plus 400% night-time data.
From their website, it looks like it's now been re-organized to 100 (minimum), 150, 200, 250GB etc per month + 1000GB/month night-time data.
Up until now I wasn't even aware of the pricing for their top-up scheme (now R9/GB, from R19), but even at R9/GB it's not too exciting ...

Mine used to be the 300Gb/1200Gb package, and now on 500Gb/1000Gb, so not actually gaining any "extra" data, except for an extra 200Gb to burn through during "normal" hours.

Placed an order for the 20Mbps with 150GB + 1000GB @R938pm. Really happy I didn't sign a contract with telkom... \

Think this is going to be an awesome upgrade from the pathetic 2Mbps line I currently have.

So I bought a house in Garsfontein that's literally going to be on the edge of the new rollout - i.e. in the street where the rollout stops (but on the side of the street inside the pink area).

What's the chance that I will actually get it?

I don't have the house yet - waiting for transfers and bonds etc. - so I can't say that I've seen Telkom guys around installing fibre. But I am obviously very keen on getting it...

Hey ebendl !
Pretty good chance, I'd say.
As background for what follows : The overhead part of the fibre infrastructure is usually piggybacked onto the old voice/DSL lines, as seen here.

Usually that means that on the property just inside the "planned" (light purple) area, the existing voice/DSL lines are at the back side (not the street side) of the property.
So for instance, if you were on the north side of Jacqueline Drive in the pic above (arbitrary example), you would get FTTH service from the aerial lines running down the middle of the properties between Jacqueline and Thelma streets.
You should be able to verify the line placement when you next go take a look at your new crib :D

Thanks jcheek, that's what I was hoping to hear. You were the same case (i.e. on the border) if I remember correctly?

Yup, exactly the same situation.
They've since updated the map to show that coverage is going to continue (including the "wrong" side of my street) with the next phase of the rollout, but so far I've seen no trenching activity in that regard.

This "wrong side of the street" thing can be a bit rough. For the folks who live on Petrick Avenue (where the existing 991- exchange is), there is FTTH coverage only on the north side of that street. If you're on the south side (which is the exchange side!) ... sorry for you!
I guess the only consolation for those folks is that they should be able to get decent VDSL.

Nice! Welcome to the FTTH clan.
Interesting that you also show an upload speed of about 20% (plus) of your download (23.6% to be exact).
Enjoy!

10 Days for an install (and that includes a weekend) ? If so then you have just broken some kind of record!

I cant believe how fast it was AND it was meant to be installed on Monday! A guy called Vusi came out (on Monday) but left because he said there were branches in the way (I think he was just lazy) He promised to come Wednesday but as usual Wednesday came and no one arrived. We called telkom and no job card was made and a **** load of other excuses were given... after lots of calls and arguing we got in touch with 3 Afrikaans guys who came out immediately and sorted the line out fast. They said it was a little ridiculous that he refused to install because of some small branches...

Downloaded about 50Gb last night of steam games just as a test. Latency to EU game servers looks slightly lower also.

Thanks! I'm quite impressed with the performance. just a note, I'm running on my webafrica Business ADSL: 100GB + 1000GB account. The fiber package will be activated on Monday.

Hi

So Telkom stopped by to complete the site inspection on Friday last week and the contractors indicated that we should be live by the end of the week :)

Given that information, I attempted to kick off the order process with Webafrica. The response from two different consultants, however, is that I can only start the order process once the Telkom coverage map is updated. For those of you who have ordered without being in the purple area on the coverage map, how did you go about this?

That's a great sign, but ... as always, take these "off-the-cuff" contractor comments with a pinch of salt.
The guys laying conduits and fibres don't necessarily have the whole picture.

You probably spoke to Nicola Grebe at some point, she seems to handle most of these initial requests.
Try to stay in touch with her as she knows the process reasonably well. Be aware that she is based at WebAfrica's HQ in Cape Town and that WebAfrica doesn't necessarily understand the Pretoria-specific issues that well.

Based on my own experience with WebAfrica, be warned that they are not particularly aggressive in expediting new installations or following up existing ones with Telkom. Where liaison with Telkom is concerned, they seem to have more of a "Wait and see" than a "Get it done!" approach, especially before the Telkom map says that FTTH is available.

...I can only start the order process once the Telkom coverage map is updated. For those of you who have ordered without being in the purple area on the coverage map, how did you go about this?
Quick answer : Unless you have inside connections, you don't, I'm afraid. :(
In my initial enquiries, only MWeb was willing to accept an order when the Telkom map showed my block as "planned".
The others - including WebAfrica - wouldn't even give me the time of day when my area was light purple, even when I sent them pics of FTTH hardware in my back yard.
That all changed when the coverage map went dark purple on my block.

Although it seems a very passive approach, my advice is to just take a number, watch the coverage map, and wait.
You can try and speed up the system (as I did) but you will likely take a couple of months off your life!

This.

I am just patiently waiting (for the last 2+ months) for something to happen on the coverage map. Phoning and emailing Telkom or will just result in wasted time, wasted money on phone bills, grey hairs, violent mood swings and choice words being used.

Every day I look at that fibre connection box on the pole in our yard and silently swear at Telkom.
