Fibre may replace Naked ADSL

ADSL pricing needs adjustment, first.

Before worrying about fibre, I'd like Telkom to address pricing / speeds on their ADSL lines.

https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/fast-adsl/
Fast ADSL - Up to 2Mbps ADSL (now 2.5Mbps on 'my' DSLAM)
R165.00

Faster ADSL - Up to 4Mbps ADSL
R299.00

Faster Plus ADSL - Up to 8Mbps ADSL
R399.00

Fastest ADSL - Up to 10Mbps ADSL
R425.00

What I think should happen, is that for exchanges that can handle it, 4Mbps should become the minimum speed @ the R165 rate. Then, Faster should be 8Mbps @ no more than R75 - R100 more , and so on.

I'd be willing to pay up to R265 / month for 8Mbps (and I'm sure a lot of others would too), but am not willing to budge at current charges, when my actual speed is around 2.5Mbps, so I'd currently have to pay a lot more for only a marginal increase to 4Mbps.

That's my 2c ......

i would imagine Telkom could benefit from changing from copper to fiber... having a new fiber network may mean much less support, repairs and maintenance for their already overworked teams, no? less money wastage?
alas... when!? currently having ***** with my ADSL line again, but no fiber option anywhere close

We got a letter on a Telkom letterhead yesterday and again today with the following message in short version.

"Our Streetname", Garsfontein X8- Lynnwood Glen - J11

Telecommunications network upgrade(FFTH)

The Telkom network in your area is scheduled for maintenance from 2016/03/18 to 2016/04/22.

This will require Telkom employees or subcontractors to access your premises in order to complete their work.

If you can't be available during daytime between 08h00 and 17h00 please contact Huawei Service Manager to make arrangements at 0815031576, alternatively please attach your contact details on this letter and leave it where our representative will be able to find them.

Does that mean Garsfontein residents will get fibre even when not applied for?

Come on!!!! the footprint is laughably small. Its not a replacement tech when it only services a handful of areas and a customer count that numbers in, at best, the hundreds.

I have very little hope that it will happen for all in any time that could be considered reasonable.

I wanted to say this ^.

I just hope some of the adsl equipment replaced can be used in areas like mine where it is not economical to upgrade the exchange to support adsl. Then I can downgrade from 3G...

Doubt it. If anything they will replace the 3G with LTE or, if you are lucky, LTE-A.

Yes, I'm on 4mbps. I will double that for prices you mention. I don't need it, but would like to have it, and will pay a little more for it. I might even find more convenience and use more data.

The message I get is from the article:
1) FTTH is a separate product - in which Tekom has serious competition.
2) ADSL != FTTH, ADSL has no competition, you will always pay for the R185 phone line - it's nice revenue.
3) Telkom FTTH (and LTE) is only offered in upmarket suburbs where there is competition / threat of competition

DSL customers within Telkom’s fibre footprint will be given the opportunity to upgrade their copper-based connectivity to its fibre network.

Where is this sought out footprint?Oh,and please don't tell me about that nonsensical coverage map, utter rubbish in my area.I'll welcome this with open arms from a stable and reliability point of view because since May 2015 or thereabout until now(currently experiencing one) 3 bulk Network outages(taking a week+ to fix-up) and numerous faults(off the top of my head +-6...IN 10 MONTHS!!!).

Finally, no LTE whatsoever(yes, excellent 3G/HSDPA coverage) and my question is; How difficult can it be to "blanket" cover a 6km radius with LTE from a network deployment point of view and with a topography that is quite hilly and expanse around the town/city?
