Fibre network coming to George

I wonder why all the fun things happen in the Cape. Gauteng sucks! All we do is pay and pay and pay, and get ripped off and off and off.

DFA seem to be the only people pushing the IT industry forward here - they have been laying fibre all over Constantia and Bergvliet these past few weeks... good stuff.

I have seen so many cable being laid, green, blue, orange maroon, usually all 4 of them, and I still have to hear how ordinary home users have benefited.

the whole Richards Bay and Empangeni cbd had fibre cables lain well over 6 months ago, even the main streets leading into residential areas. Yet, nothing has changed. still just normal options available. surely the ISP's can use the fibre as they become available?

DFA doesn't target home users. They supply "dark" fibre, meaning that their customers can use it to connect to their own infrastructure (and thus "light" it up). Their customers would typically be operators like Cell C or Vodacom.

That being said - with the cost of trenching and ducts, R15m is not really that much of an investment...

Yep, wreaking a bit of havoc here and there when trying to exit from the George Nedbank parking area but totally worth the inconvenience

EPIC!! More nice places in the Cape that will shortly have great internet. WC is starting to pull ahead... Who would have thought Durban and Cape Town would be ahead of JB for anything business orientated!

George is in the Western Cape isn't it? Something in common there?

"It is now up to the Internet service providers (ISPs) to get fibre Internet connections to the homes..."

So how do we get access to a fibre link if we a WISP looking to supply a small client base...I doubt anyone could help us out with a 20Mbps connection...they probably want you to take a STM-1 !

In CT you could buy directly from CoCT (you must just have an ECNS license), for DFA probably only cost effective to buy from one of the big ISPs unfortunately:( If I had the capital I would build a business around providing local access (think of ADSL and IPC) to ISPs and end users.

Heard that DFA applied for wayleaves from the George Muni & Telkom in Aug 2011.
Fiber running up York Road to Blanco

DFA also will be running fiber in Mossel Bay too

Was going to say that this was old news but rather kept quiet for fear of being flamed.... Do you have a street map of all Telkom's optic fibres in the George area?

Nope MickeyD, I reckon Telkom fiber spans every main street in George.

Neotel installed a fiber ring around George CBD 4 years ago
VC must be using the DFA
midafricam
?

Cannot wait for Telkom MSAN to rollout in the next 1-3 years in George for 40 Mb/s VDSL
as I am not happy with my 10 Mb/s speeds ;)

Now I don't have to move to George! Do you have more info on DFA plans in Mossel Bay?
Sorry no info

Reviving a dead thread here... Any of my fellow George folks have an alternative to ADSL for gaming? Telkom's infrastructure is not working as it should for months now and I am fed up to get a technician every 3 weeks...

As far as I know Fibre is only available in Fancourt, Kingswood and Kraaibosch. I don't live in one of these areas and really want to cancel my ADSL for something more stable.

Help me please guys :-)

Frogfoot fibre is going to start their rollout around the 9th of Jan 2019 and for a change actually plans to give the "man in the street" fibre, not just the villages. They plan to be done in about 9 months with their rollout through Heatherlands and surrounding areas.

As a last ditch effort you could try request a line upgrade to 20mbps VDSL... if still no joy then your options are:

MTN LTE
Cloudconnect

Friend of mine on MTN LTE has a surprisingly decent connection.
Depends ofcourse on which area you live in.
