nice work but how do i actually make use of it at or at work?
 
Great news - if you go to their website you can see detailed maps of exactly where the fibre runs. Most of the fibre was planned to run past MTN and Vodacom base stations by the looks of it.

With metro rings now available, surely ISPs can now save millions on leasing city wide bandwidth for 'local' traffic? I expect some inventive products in future, like uncapped citywide bandwidth or even uncapped Gauteng bandwidth.

With every now and then a juicy piece of GOOD news coming from "Staff-Writer" one wonders why NOTHING from ISP's :confused:

We really ALL need to make a plan and go to iWEEK -- they seem to have a good line up (Target firing line :D )

What you have is bright fibre. :)

FYI the term "dark fibre" is a common term meaning that the cable was laid informally (like when they just cut the road) so if you run your own fibre cable between two buildings it is considered dark fibre
 
This sounds like good news but it depends what the cable is connecting. First, a map would be helpful. Then it would be useful to know if this is to carry longhaul traffic, traffic from enterprises to ISPs, traffic between operator switches, or what?

The point is - what's in it for us? How do we benefit

It has been mentioned twice already in this thread that there is a map on their website. It would be common sense that the other info is also on their website.

and no... I'm not gonna give you the website name :rolleyes:

The DFA Metro trenches are designed to accommodate up to 28 Fibre Optic Cables in an array of microducts. Each fibre optic cable can consist of up to 144 fibres. With today’s transmission technology each fibre pair is capable of supporting at least 80 Lambdas running at 40GBps.

Wow! That's 12,902,400 GBps!! No capacity problem here :p

R 1875 per meter. ( is that right R1.5 B / 800 000 meter ) sounds high ! I am sure that I previously saw the cost of R500 per meter

Dont forget the cost of actually getting the cable into the ground. I read somewhere that it made up about 70% of this projects costs.

Not sure but I have seen them put between 3 and 4 cables in each trench... so the quick answer is a crap load.

Do the math again as I cannot see how you get to that figure.

(144/2)= 72 fiber pairs (f)
80 lamdas (l) per fiber pair
40Gb/s speed (not ratified by IEEE yet, currently only 10Gb/s)

72*80*40Gb/s= 246 400Gb/s or 240Tb/s per cable

28cables*246400 Gb/s= 6 899 200Gb/s or 6.7Tb/s
 
The cable is only one part of the equation. You still need transmission equipment all over the place (eg. SDH or next generation SDH). With AC power and UPS backup and network management elements and aircon and alarms... Not cheap. This is before you can think of linking customers to the network.

What you talking about, most people reckon "you just plug it in" :D

People don't realise that the cable is the cheapest part of the whole operation.
 
Yessss; take the fibre straight from the duct into a wall jack at your house!! LOL
