Hi,

I've been waiting since November for my ADSL installation. Found out recently part of the problem was that I have fibre optic phone lines. They therefore needed to install a mini-exchange at the exchange, which I gather they have now done.

The thing is they have had (or at least they tell me they have had) technicians working at the exchange for at least the last week, I think more and they can't seem to activate the line. Anyway had this done or similiar problems and know how much longer it could take. (Ok I know it could still take forever, but going for hope :P )

Also heard conflicting stories. Firstly I could self-install, then I couldn't and now I can again. Anyone done a self-install with an fibre-optic line?

Thanks

Hi, I'm just down the road from you and had a similar problem with self install. The truth is that the blue boxes on the street have fibre optic lines to the exchange. They install equipment in the blue boxes which then converts to signal to be transmitted on a copper wire. The settings (or address) of this converter needs to be configured into the ADSL service. A technician therefore has to come out to check and relay these settings of the converter back to Telkom. They therefore say you can't do a self installation because a techie has to come out. The truth is that it is their problem and if a techie sorts this out outside, then you could do a self install.

I applied for a self install on 9 Nov 06. Logged a complaint on HelloPeter on 11 Dec 06. On 12 Dec 06, got someone from Telkom explain this to me. Opted for the techie to come out on 13 Dec and installtion complete within 5 minutes of the techie arriving on site. I had preconfigured the router etc. and set it up. He made his changes outside before entering the premises. We looked at the router when he arrived, it was syncing. He plugged in his laptop and got some settings and emailed this back to telkom and he left.

Needless to say I was upset at having to pay for installation when they did nothing but pop in and say hi.

Hey, thanks, at least that lets me know a bit more of what I'm "discussing" with them. Probably should go the Hellopeter route then as well, see if that doesn't bump up the priority a bit as well.
