Fibre piracy

'Fibre piracy' sounds more like a situation where bandwidth or data would be siphoned off a cable, and nothing to do with a trench. 'Trench hijacking' is definitely a more appropriate term in this instance.

Piracy? WTF - you can't steal fresh air? I guess piracy is the word of the moment, much like "terrist".

Good point, I also think it's just like metalcore said, basically someone trying to make an eye catching headline without even thinking about it (on MyADSL news whether quoted or not, what a shock)

With this it's like saying they pirated someone's labour (the digging of trenches), fiber piracy would be pirated/knock-off fiber sold as a brand name. I guess everyone is a "journalist".

I think this shows a(nother) deficiency with the government, they should know where all this digging is going to take place and should make companies place their fiber in the same trench, or at least inform them so they can decide if they want to. This could save money and time and broken cables downtime and other complications, as when one cable has been laid another is less likely to go through the whole process on the same spot possibly damaging the cable already in place.

Makes you wonder if the sub contractor wasn't in fact also doing some sub contracting or leasing his trench diggers (back hand deals). When the cable broke and "nobody knew" about it. Hence the so called "cheaper contract". :D

I just read Vodacom/MTN sub contracting dark fibre, sub contracting trench diggers..., to many sub contracting. oh well creates jobs I guess.

How the hell is this considered piracy? Piracy by definition means illegal copying something of an original. Piracy is theft (so they say). One might argue the definition of theft means the original goes away where piracy just duplicates it, the original is still there

Actually piracy by definition means robbery at sea...

Maybe we should ask Somalia for some input here.

More seriously, trenches should be shared, and if a new trench is necessary, the initial contractor should be obliged to make certain there is enough space for other cables. Why sould we have 5 trenches dug over the same road right next to each other?

Obviously the first contractor would be paid for the wider trench in his contract, and the next contractors would not be able to charge for the trenching.

mmm they stealing each others trenches.... (that just sounds wrong)

Boo Hoo - one less set of trenches being dug can only be good news for motorists. If the trench diggers dug the hole, planted the fibre, and then repaired the roads and sidewalks all on the same day like they say they can, then there wouldn't be an issue.

In my view the crowd taking advantage of the hole are doing a good thing.

I thought that "fibre piracy" was leeching off of your neighbour's fiber line, much like happens with wifi networks. This is apparently "trench piracy", or something.

Can you imagine going to the police station, and laying a case for "trench theft" :D

LMAO. I read once on this forum, that someone went and laid a charge at the police station that someone was stealing his bandwidth for the internet. The police officer, replied... "eish, what is da internet".
