thats a parastatal with a falling and failing infrastructure (read an article where they numbered the amount of people leaving their fixed line rentals. A buddy at Mweb who sees the stats of fibre uptake. they also did a lot of free fibre upgrades in the metropolitan areas which is now taken on by openserve, telkom has essentially also split into 3 different companies working as one, so group profit could hide openserve balances

Which is why they're rolling out fiber and why they would not cut back on it...
The VDSL roll-out seems to have slowed/stopped entirely, Secunda is the only place I've heard of it being done, probably due to it being cheaper or not worthwhile to roll out fiber to you until a later point.

And those stats are?

They've been split for a while now.

Page 62 of the report, under "Fixed Stream"

That's versus the R2 702m of 2016 on the next page.

I phoned couple of times to upgrade and all that they say is on there systems it shows max of 2mb and they dont understand technical terms and cant upgrade if systems show only 2mb,sorry goodbye.

That sucks.

Seems my line got upgraded, did a quick test this morning, but speeds are a bit erratic. Will test tonight to see.

Hey sorry for the delay.
Yes my line is now 20mbps so it has been upgraded. Happy days =) . At work so will try and add some pics later =) .

As I stated previously, you need to keep on phoning back till you get someone that actually knows how to do their job, and not only look at the coverage map. They must look at your line stats, and take it from there. If you are having trouble, PM the TelkomZA rep here on the forums, that guy is a huge help, probably the only person at telkom that knows what they are doing!! Hats off to him, I owe him a beer or 10.

Hope it goes well. I noticed some interesting stuff going on with my line stats, and I am not entirely sure what it could be. My line attenuation stays low (8.5 up/down) but my SNR for down is jumping quite hectic at some stages (between 10 and -10, yes negative ten, didnt even know it can go into negative), but the line never drops, it stays connected.

Now I am not sure if this has something to do with the fact that I am not using a VDSL router (still using my ADSL2+ router) or if the port just isnt configured properly. Like I said the line stays connected, only the ping that spikes to 300 and then drops back down so it is quite puzzling. I do need a new router though so I am on the look out for one with a stronger wifi range.

Hi, yes, seems to be stable now :)

Downloading from steam at constant 2,2mbs.

Also, when not downloading, can stream netflix/showmax on full quality while watching 720p youtube videos, not buffering or quality drop. So far very happy with the jump from 4 to 20, the increased usability and extra speed feels surreal.

Will have to check if i have vdsl router, don't think so.
 
I changed my router, got a new vdsl/adsl router, and the SNR is much more stable. Pondering the change to vdsl from adsl2+, but not sure if it is worth it.

It is, it's more stable, you'll have 2Mbps upload (makes quite a difference actually) and you'll have a slightly higher max as VDSL has less overheads.
 
my line stats has also increased by a longshot!
but what a mission to convince the Telkom geniuses to up my speed as "our system only shows 4mb in your area" :sick:
I stay about a block or so downstream of Echo str and there is a new box right outside my house.
According to this site speedguide https://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php I should easily achieve up to 23mb on adsl2+.
Attenuation indicates that I am about 650m from the exchange which means that the box outside my yard has not been activated yet, but that aside, with current specs I must reach at least 8mb.
Price wise it makes sense to make use of Telkom`s current 10mb offer (R799 * 24 months) as that is a mere R20 on top of my current cost.
SNR;
US margin = 22
DS margin = 31

Attenuation;
DS = 9
US = 4
 
I'm only getting 4 mb/s line speed. My line stats are as follows. Line attenuation: Down 57db, up 31.5, signal to noise: down 9 up 11.0 db, power : down 19.5 up 12

There.. 10mb line ordered after a hefty argument because "our system shows you can only get 4mb" :D

Dumb question, how does one do that? Must you phone Telkom again to ask for it?

Yeah, it might/probably require a tech to move you to a port that supports VSDL modulation. Your router also has to support VDSL.
The biggest problem is that often the call center people don't understand the difference. You might want to go through Telkom_ZA on the forum, h/she knows their stuff.
