Fibre: Secunda Community

Telkom is our best bet sadly. Vox/Frogfoot still have that planned fibre roll-out to the coastal areas through Witbank and Secunda, but no one has any news about that. Telkom is at least bringing the fibre up to the boxes, but dont know when they will activate it. One guy said it should/have to be done before march, but it doesnt look like that will happen. They say it should give every one access to 20-40mbs vdsl, but that is yet to be seen. The techies I have been speaking to seems very confidant that it will solve our problems. FTTH is still preferred but a 20mbs line will have to do till the fibre players find a place to buy some brains and start using it.

Was wondering what Telkom was digging and putting in.

Just hope it will not be like Dark Fibre Africa, i.e. only giving access to service providers in stead of domestic use.

Well March is almost half way. Hopefully the net will improve by end of March. Time will tell.

Seems they have started going into side streets from the main branch, they have started digging holes and laying cables in Drakensberg street.

Yea erm , that is the first thing i tried but a week later and guess what , nothing.

I tried here because i though someone might know him personally or is able to contact him.

P.S Next time try to assume that the most logical thing has been tried.

And if you are going to advice me to private message him on my broadband that has been done as well Captain.

The site is a volunteer run thing.
The most logical thing would have been to state "anyone know how to contact him, I've already used the site".
Have you tried checking on a neighbour fb page.

Johnatan thanks you, you were an enormous help.

Anyhow back to the normal people , i have made contact ! I have the Surveys but it lacks some content just sorting it out with Hawky before i start engaging with my contact at Crystal Web again.

I will keep everyone update on Facebook and here from time to time .

I see the crystal thing is wireless last mile, not complete fibre. I am very skeptical about wireless solutions since the weather plays a huge part in your connectivity (Well same could be said for copper...) but the good news is that it only requires 20 people in a small radius. Would love to hear more from them.

Spoke to openserve employee and the plan is for those shiney MSAN's to go live end of this week, they are only waiting for inspection to be done this week.

Thanks @quantic will follow the updates on facebook, hope you can convince them.

Went to crystal web's page and read up a bit. Price seems really fair for the lines. Would really love more info. Dont want to sign up there just yet, hoping that @quantic can persuade them to use the secunda site as a measure of interest. The only catch I see is that it must be 20 CONFIRMED signup's, that might cause a bit of an issue. It would be nice if there was some sort of feasibility meter so we can see how many people we need to blackmail

Weather doesn't have as huge an impact as interference, the more that sign up the worse the quality. I'd check if they're using licensed or unlicensed spectrum. The more that sign up the higher chance of fiber roll-out but the wireless will degrade.

Well I'll try the first and best thing that comes up. My Internet has been getting progressively worse the last 2-3 months. Hope things will improve by end of month

Has anyone else suddenly had a small improvement? Last 2 days download speed just under 6 mb/s, up from 2-3,5mb/s. Upload still sucks though.

I think some of the new boxes went live, Ive not been so lucky my speed seems to be getting worse. FML - Fibre My Life PLease someone

Well so far it looks like the speeds have slowed down a little bit but still faster then a month ago. Would like higher upload and lower ping.

Well Telkom missed their deadline with the new MSAN's (no surprise). It was supposed to go live end march, still nothing, and I dont see them at the boxes where they were working anymore so they must be finished, last time I spoke to a Telkom employee he said they are awaiting inspection. Also no feedback from the crystal web option. All went quiet again. SIGH.
