Fibre: Secunda Community

I checked the Telkom Coverage map and I see they added Future Fibre availability. I know that this doesn't mean much but atleast it seems as if something is happening.

That was on there for a while now, it is basically just a show of interest where you can sign up. If and when enough people signed they will install fibre.

Open serve tech says they are upgrading all the main boxes first, so all the small boxes will be replaced by the big ones. There are still a lot of small telkom boxes...

Well a little birdy told me that there are Telkom cut-overs planned from June 15 to June 29 here in Secunda. So lets hope that the new MSAN's will bring us some joy. Would still prefer fibre, but hey... Any new news from Crystal Web? That XTTH option from them sounds so sweet.....

Ok, so today my internet was down when I woke up at about 12:00 (working nightshift so dont judge). I heard from a Telkom rep that the cut-overs to the new MSAN's will be between June 15 and June 29, so I took a walk to the node (place where I get my internet from) to see what is going on.

There was 2 Openserve bakkies and 2 other vehicles standing there, needless to say my heart skipped a beat. I went to talk to them to find out if they are busy with the cut-over and the replay was YES. They said that they should be finished by about 15:00 and I will see a huge improvement.

At 14:30 my router indicated that it is connected and I promptly went to check what changed. My speed is still the same (3.5meg) that is obvious, but my line stats was superb. Where my Line Attenuation Downstream was 59 it is now 7.5 and upstream is also 7.5 , where my SNR downstream was 6 - 6.2 it is now 39 and upstream is now 16.5!!! Now that is a huge HUGE improvement.

I phoned Telkom immediately to try and boost my line speed to 20megs, but due to technical difficulties (another long story) they could not do it today, but that should be sorted tomorrow. Once that is sorted I will try and boost it again. I will keep you all up to date with the progress tomorrow, but in the meantime you guys can be on the lookout for better line stats to know if they are finished with your area.

It may not be fibre, but hey 20meg >>>>>>>>>>>> 3.5meg, so I am happy, and will hopefully be even happier tomorrow.

Can I ask what street you live in?

With all the complaints starting to filter through on Fibre speeds, I reckon 20 MB ADSL is a very decent connection.

Noob question, how do you test the line stats (program, command line etc?)

Want to see if mine has changed. (Openserve box is in Nelson Mandela drive, before you get to the Spar/KFC) Seen a few Openserve guys working on the box the past week.

Hi Henry, i also live in echo street and my stats looks also much better but my router says i can only get 10meg line on adsl 2 plus, i am staying near the end of echo street are you more at beginning. my stats were also Line Attenuation Downstream 58 and now 19 and SNR 6 but only went up to 14, what router are you using and did you visit our telkom to upgrade or call centre? when i restart my router it shows attainable rate of 21mg but when it refresh it shows only 10mg :(

Hey. Yea right at the beginning of Echo street. Your SNR is what is holding you back, mine is hovering between 35 and 38.
I am using a Billion (cant remember model name, not at home now so cant check for you, sorry) router.

No I phoned 10213 for the upgrade, but be warned, they are not the smartest of people and will try to tell you that your area does not support faster than 4meg (their system does not yet show that the upgrade in our area is complete, guessing that the technicians will sign off once everything is completed, so not in a while), you will have to keep phoning back until you reach one operator that can think a bit and listen to what you are trying to explain to them. They must look at your line stats on their side and not the coverage map. (luckily it is free from your land line =P, so feel free to keep on phoning till you get one that is willing to help you, took me about 5 tries today)

10meg sounds about right for you, since it looks like your line is taking a hit from somewhere since your stats takes a dip once you refresh it.
