Fibre: Secunda Community

You'll have to pose that question to DFA

Already did, they said no one is using it since we must get enough people to sign up at one of the isp's that uses their backbone since DFA only supplies the back end for the isp's. Thought you had new info.

Ok so seems like 3xcom is doing fibre installations in Secunda. Never heard of them, so I sent them a email, apparently they are installing the fibre for Vodacom, still unsure about how it is going to work and what ISP's we will be able to get. I am awaiting on a reply to my second email to see what areas in Secunda will be covered.

They did send me a form to fill in to show interest\place an order for a line, but I want some more info first.

This is good news for all of us, will post more info when I receive it.

Ok they are doing phase one first, it is between Helen Joseph, PDP Kruger and the P185 road (road from Evander to Trichard), so everything in between those three roads will be done first. Still dont know where phase two, three and four is, since no one can give me that answer. All I know is Secunda is devided in to four phases and phase one is done first, so if anyone is lucky enough to be inbetween those roads, you should keep us updated plz.

Wonder if there is an "digging installation" fee.

I did apply. The order has already been approved. They will contact me for installation. Will follow-up but from what I could see, there is no extra costs if you take a 12/24 month contract. If you take month-to-month, there is a R1000 installation cost and you have to get your own router.

I see the prices are a bit higher than in JHB and surrounds.

Okty, I see in the email you had a discussion with them in 2081? :)

Typo from their side, 2018 ;)

Did they give you an indication of when they will install?

I'm tempted to try maybe a 12month contract, but then afraid other providers come in with better package deals.

How much does a 'fibre' modem cost? Otherwise was thinking of doing a month to month basis and fork out money for my own modem etc

I had another look on the website. I was mistaken, even if you take the month-to-month you will still get a Huawei HG659 VDSL Router but there is an activation fee of R910 that you need to pay. The VDSL router will connect to the fibre "modem" to give you Wifi and 4 ethernet ports.

They did not say when, they just said that they are busy with the roll-out. I did request a schedule/timeline from them. Will most probably only hear on Monday.

I am in that area and ordered it from vodacom today.

Order approved and they will contact me for an installation date. Haven't seen guys digging in my neighborhood yet so will keep you guys updated.

Will be interesting to see the 'digging costs':

Installations

40. Vodacom will appoint an approved installer to install the Vodacom Fibre service at the customer’s premises.

41. The approved installer will require reasonable access to the customer’s premises.

42. The approved installer will install the Vodacom Fibre service in accordance with the detailed installation guidelines for a standard installation as per the Vodacom Fibre Installation Schedule.

43. The detailed installation guidelines will include the maximum installation specifications that will be included in a standard installation.

44. If the Vodacom Fibre service installation exceeds the standard installation specifications, then any additional installation expenses will be for the customer’s account.

44.1. Any additional installation expenses will be settled directly with Vodacom or with the approved installer.

44.2. The installation will be deemed fully operational if the approved installer successfully tests the Vodacom Fibre service with the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) provided by Vodacom as part of the Vodacom Fibre service contract.

45. The approved installer will not test the installation’s operational status with any other CPE than the CPE provided by Vodacom.

46. The customer undertakes to maintain the installation, including all equipment provided, in good order including environmental considerations as detailed in the Vodacom Fibre Service Schedule.

47. The customer may not move or alter the Vodacom Fibre service installation and must notify Vodacom if there is a need to move or alter the installation.

48. Only a Vodacom approved installer may move or alter a Vodacom Fibre service installation.

49. The customer is required to sign the Customer Acceptance Certificate after installation of the service and equipment. In the event that the customer is not physically present at the time of installation and is therefore unable to sign the Customer Acceptance Certificate, it will be the duty of the customer to do so at his earliest convenience but no later than 48 hours post installation. The signed Customer Acceptance Certificate needs to be emailed to [email protected]. In the event that Vodacom does not receive a signed Customer Acceptance Certificate within the stipulated 48 hours, the service will be deemed to be accepted and the service billable to the customer.

Non-standard Installation

50. A non-standard installation for Vodacom network applies to cable length in excess of 40 (forty) metres.

51. The Vodacom approved installer will survey the customer premises to determine the customer’s preferred route and whether non-standard installation charges are applicable.

52. A non-standard installation shall entail the drop length that exceed the standard installation metres.

53. Vodacom will only bill the non-standard installation charges as a once-off.

54. Customers will be liable for any amount over and above the standard installation charges on the installation of the ONT or Switch which is limited to a specific linear metre as indicated below:

54.1. Installations on the Vodacom network are limited to 40 metres; the customer will be liable for any
installation over 40 metres at a rate of R 200.00 (Incl. VAT) per linear metre.

54.2. Installations on the Openserve network are limited to 8 metres; the customer will be liable for any installation over 8 metres at a rate of R 182.40 (Incl. VAT) per linear metre. Openserve does not install any non-standard installation requirements that exceed 200 metres.

54.3. Installations on Metrofibre network are limited to 15 metres; the customer will be liable for any installation over 15 metres at a rate of R 182.40 (Incl. VAT) per linear metre. Over above this, Metrofibre charges a once off fee of R1500 in some areas and R2500 for Kyalami and agricultural areas.

54.4. Installations on FrogFoot network are limited to 30 metres; the customer will be liable for any installation over 30 metres at a rate of R 57 (Incl. VAT) per linear metre. The amount will be paid to Frogfoot directly

54.5. Installations on the Link Africa network are limited to 30 metres; the customer will be liable for any installation over 30 metres at a rate of R 228.00 (Incl. VAT) per linear metre.

54.6. Vumatel, SADV and Octotel fibre installations to the home are not limited to a specific metres; therefore customers taking up a on these networks will not incur additional charges on installation.

55. The Vodacom non-standard installation charges will be billed on following month Vodacom Fibre bill.

56. If the customer cancels the Vodacom Fibre service after the installation of the ONT by the Network provider then the customer will be liable for non-standard

My order is also in. They said installation will be in a month's time. Let's hope for the best.

Good to see things happening. Those in phase one should keep us up to date with developments. The only issue I have is that they want to have control over the router (CPE) and you have to request temporary access to change wifi passwords etc. That is so stupid. The prices is fair, not the best, but also not the worst. It may get better once the go open access but we will have to wait for that to happen.

Will be interesting to see the 'digging costs':
There will be no digging cost for normal installation (up to 40m of cabeling). If the distance exceeds 40m then it is (if I remember correctly) R280p/m at your expense.

Yes, if you look at the TCs I quoted added in bold, though from the 'telkom' fibre lines it is 8 meters:

I also have applied, but it will be interesting to see where they will dig from to go to my house. If my estimate is correct, the DFA line will be the closest.

Edit: so I did a quick calculation, I am about 140 meters from the DFA line, so that's about R20 000 for line installation

No, they only charge you from your pavement/outside box to inside your home, which wont exceed 40m unless you live in a mansion with one long ass driveway.

Thanks Henry.

That is actually a relief to hear! Now I am actually excited again! :D
