Like.This could be the most likely problem. I find on a 100mbps connection, if you connect to your router over wifi you're bound to experience fluctuations. This is even more likely when more devices connect to your wifi.

all tests using cable direct to router - no other network clients connected - no backgroundd internet activity on mac.
(correct cable / gigabit ethernet on mac / 1m cable length)
