Fibre with 4G mix

I moved to an area with only Octotel and from what I read its "probably" not the most stable Fibre available in this country. I also have a TP-Link AC1750 which work well over the last couple of years, and why fix something thats working.

I want to add some kind of 4G/5G redundancy to the setup, so that if the Fibre do act up the 4G/5G could take over.

Have anyone done this or tried it before?

A lot of WiFi routers have built in 4G redundancy function all you have to is insert a sim or put a dongle into the USB port and it will automatically switch to 4G when there's no internet

I have a couple of older TP-Link routers (Those that can still take a 3G USB modem) and you can set the preferred and fallback connections on those.

For example, you can make the WAN connection your primary, and if it drops you can use the 3G dongle as secondary.

As far as I remember the Huawei B618 also allows you to set up a primary and secondary connection. I think pretty much any LTE router should be able to support this.

If you want to take it a step further, Mikrotik can also be configured to do this. I currently have a setup where I load balance two Fibre connections to get "double" speed, but it also acts as a fallback. If one of the connections goes down, it won't make a difference unless I was downloading at line speed.

I'd like to caution one thing though, make sure you have a proper LTE/5G connection with lots of data - or uncapped. You don't want to fall back and not know about it while for example downloading a 90GB Steam game

Believe me you make that mistake only once. Used to have one of those Vodacom jobbies, and on holiday forgot to limit the thing. R6,000 later ...
Was thinking of a R250 Rain SIM (yes I know, but its only for redundency).

I too love to punish myself. Just kidding though, if it works for you it works At least you will know if you're on the fallback
