They got the option to host not because of any reason other than POLITICS.
South Africa’s biggest forum. Discuss, discover, and connect with thousands of members.
This time around it's not naysayers, but FIFA who are concerned. This is also not the first time FIFA have voiced such concerns is it? Screw the naysayers by all means, but if FIFA starts tapping fingers then the excuses should stop and action should start.OK, let take a step back, this government has succeeded where all other governments before it have failed, including those on the African continent!
We were given the world cup to host and from the very outset the naysayers were egging us on to fail.
The FIFA World Cup is probably the second best thing (other than democracy) that has happened to this country and we have people that believe we should be taught a lesson and loose it. How quaint.
The world cup is the single biggest driver in the battle to sort out all our infrastructure woes, including Telecoms, yet people want it to fail. Bizarre!
It is events like this that enable governments to invest massive amounts of money in infrastructure projects.
We have had 2 sets of international visitors from our business partners in the last month, from France and from Germany. Both these groups of people seem confident that the 2010 world cup will be back in Germany. This sickens me.
Failure to host this event is not n option, it will do serious damage to everyone here and the country as a whole.

@ Sneeky Fifa can;t publicly critise SA yet it would affect their ability to attract sponseship etc. If they are going to pull it it will be swift and sudden and more than likely go to australia. They don't need to build any infratructure and have lots of experience in hosting big events like this.
There is no horror in that at all however we are not ready for it and we do not deserve it. On paper this country is great. In reality this gvt is creating their own appartheid in certain ways.
Hmm I didn't even think of that and you are absolutely correct. My point stands - what happens after 2010?The saddest comments in this thread are those about how the WC gives the government incentive to improve our infrastructure. How pathetic is it that nothing will happen unless there is some sort of gain to be had by our politicians. If this is the only reason they would improve our infrastructure we truly are lost.
That the WC gives the government a concrete deadline is undeniable and works in our favour. The saddest comments in this thread are those about how the WC gives the government incentive to improve our infrastructure. How pathetic is it that nothing will happen unless there is some sort of gain to be had by our politicians. If this is the only reason they would improve our infrastructure we truly are lost.
Why should I support a system that does not support me? Come one lets be honest. This gvt as any gvt takes care of its own. I do not fall into that category. Too many people i know have died due to crime and I hold the gvt responsible. If they cannot gaurantee the job they do then they must leave. How can I support a system that discriminates against me ?
But it's not working in our favour. Besides for stadiums and an overpriced train in the smallest province in the country, what other new infrastructure is being created for the citizens of this country? Thousands of police and security will ensure the safety of the WC2010 tourists yet our own people are suffering under immense crime that is dismissed as nothing more than a perception by our almost never here and even less available number one citizen. The government created a BEE beast and is now being sued because the "most" BEE'd contender was not selected in the tendering process:That the WC gives the government a concrete deadline is undeniable and works in our favour.![]()
As for the deadline, FIFA is growing concerned about this gvt even meeting that deadline. In essence, it says its price was the lowest, its black empowerment element the strongest and it should have been awarded the tender.
Incorrect, the cup goes back to Germany, the previous host country. Australia, having hosted the Olympics would obviously kick up a fuss, as ozzies tend to do@ Sneeky Fifa can;t publicly critise SA yet it would affect their ability to attract sponseship etc. If they are going to pull it it will be swift and sudden and more than likely go to australia. Hi Icyrus, the intial comment and yours are valid, but this type/size of investment does not happen without a driver. The saddest comments in this thread are those about how the WC gives the government incentive to improve our infrastructure. Ok I agree this GVt needs to solve the crime issue, but if you are so bitter about living here, why dont you leave?
You mean we wont benefit from the improved security, digital tv, communications, etc as required by fifa? But it's not working in our favour.
