just out of interest....The total prize money on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA as $420 million, a 60 percent increase on the 2006 tournament.[8] Before the tournament, each participating team would receive $1 million, for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, teams exiting at the group stage would receive $8 million

Interesting to note how quickly a story like this will get shared multiple times on this forum yet a good news one battles to make it on. It is so sad that this forum has become a magnet for negativity.

Don't quite understand this. SA is buzzing. People are selling Soccer stuff like it's going out of fashion. This WC will put us solidly on the map even more so than some of the big tournaments we have hosted and yes fifa are making money.

I think you guys should boycott the WC and not watch it since you feel so strongly :D, i will be enjoying the WC and our company is making nice cash from the soccer related items we sell. Best thing that has ever happened to this country by a mile.
 
Remember there are a lot of people who are wanting and hoping for the world cup to fail. They will keep kicking and punching to the bitter end.

Not sure what you mean, all the massive WC games are sold out. Not sure people want to watch chile play some other team so obviously it will not be sold out. Which rugby because the lions stadium is always just about empty :D.

In this case this is an important story because it effects SA. I couldn't believe that all that money was spent on stadiums where only a couple of matches would be played. The sick part is that the SMME's are getting screwed over. The big companies can easily afford Fifa's licence but the small guy in the street making curios and artworks is stuffed unless he has connections.

This WC should be about show casing SA and our talent and art. Instead its a money making machine by Fifa. But in all fairness we are hosting the event for Fifa so it isn't our event and we should have known before even trying to get the WC that its designed to benefit Fifa, I don't think Fifa make secrets out of that.

The WC should only be hosted in first world countries that can afford it.

Thats all talk, and hype to get people to buy tickets, it happens at every big competition like this. What will happen is that Fifa will hand out free tickets at the last minute if neccessary to school kids etc like they have done overseas, to fill up the stadiums. They aren't interested in making money from ticket sales, its the broadcasting and licencing etc where they make their money.

I think your post demonstrates a little of the misunderstandings the man on the street has. Of course it is FIFA event. They just choose to have it in your country. All eyes will be on Africa though. I would think that everyone would want this. Those that are proud of this country want the world to see what we have to offer. Those who appear to hate the place get their chance for the world to see how riddled with crime and corruption this place apparently is.

Stadiums are repeatedly mentioned but no mention is made of the road upgrades, the revamping of the beach front (in the case of Durban) and other infrastructural improvements that are being made. No mention is made of the psychological upliftment that will be felt by many citizens as a result of an event like this being held in our country. Already the country is filled with a buzz and excitement.

If SMME were savvy they'd be making money from this event too. Every shop is climbing on the world cup band wagon and I'm sure many are already benefiting. What is stopping those guys selling their bead work well away from the stadium precinct where tourists will be?

FIFA doesn't need the money. They have their record $3.4 billion revenues in the bank.

The LOC do not need the money. They budgeted for 60% sale of tickets...they're now at 96%, and broke even 2 months ago.

MATCH has broke even already.

WHAT is the opportunity cost to poor SA citizens ?????

South African RESIDENTS NEED is GREATER.

So that effective service delivery can have ANY chance of succeeding.

Water Reticulation
Road Maintenance
Sewerage Treatment
Effective crime reduction
Supply of affordable electicity
Tax Relief
A viable and functioning NATIONAL rail system

and so the list of social needs continues.........

FIFA will come and go and Sepp Blater will just be a bad memory

The SA poor will just keep on getting poorer.

You're suggesting service delivery is definitely negatively impacted by the WC which is so far off.

The masses have poor service delivery because they voted for it, not because of FIFA or the LOC of Blatter.

If I'm not mistaken Cape Town came out tops in service delivery, while preparing to host.

I'd love to debate service delivery, but bundling it altogether, because its easier, does not begin to address the fundamental issues surrounding service delivery, which requires both government and people to work together.

E.g. For every R1 spent on installing taps, the City of Cape Town has to spend something like 50c to repair vandalized infrastructure.

Feel free to open a thread dedicated to service delivery issues and we can debate it there.

Using FIFA as the scapegoat is becoming both stale and lame. So 2006.

That I do not for one moment believe Actually I retract that. They had no initial outlay of any significance other than to try and shepard accommodation providers aboard and perhaps buy block seats on airlines-presold as part of accommodation packages in the bigger Hotels. I heard via the bushvine that the Arabella Sheraton released a crapload of previously block booked rooms when FeeFa said the Gummint was going to pay. Arabella said no way Jose.
I do not believe Match has made a profit of any significance if any judging by the number of smaller hotels and guesthouses and B&B's who refused to sign up.
In any case Cape Town will be swamped. That I am now sure of.
