Well, caught up with all the highlights from the overnight games. Standout result was actually Ivory Coast vs Ecuador. The latter could've won it easily if their shots were just an inch or two below the crossbar (they hit it twice, at least). Very unlucky, but Ivory Coast won it in the end.

Also, could we please start calling countries by their standardised English names? It's Ivory Coast, not Côte d'Ivoire. Otherwise we're going to need to do it for all the countries. Can't wait to watch België vs مصر , España vs Cabo Verde and Uruguay (the only normal one so far) vs لمملكة العربية السعودية

Don't think it's as simple as "Netherlands B team". Claude AI underestimates the Total Football machine that is the Netherlands. They start them at like age 5, so there are a LOT (as in thousands) of players ahead of the Curacao first XI.

That's the mistake people often make, but football really doesn't work that way, I also see Nigerians moaning that they could have done much better than South Africa, but they forget that one of the reason they could not qualify was because they drew against Lesotho, you don't even have to ask where Lesotho is ranked on Fifa.

It is complex. For me that is why the WC is exciting all the wildcards, I find normal Football mundane.

Curacao people are all Dutch citizens, and so 25 out of 26 in the squad were born in Netherlands.

Personally, I think SA did better than I expected. Mexico are no pushovers and 14th ranked against 60th and to expect anything other than a pumping in front of a massive home crowd on such an opccasion was wishfull thinking. And imo they were not over run at all, and although disappointing and the second sending off was again imo quite ridiculous, 2-0 was quite respectable.

I admit I'm not familiar with Bafana's style or normal set up etc, but to me the occassion was big, the Mexicans especially would have been nervous and the game was pretty poor in general. Admitedly SA were poor, but Mexico never left second gear though and were always in control. They were not losing this game no matter how good SA played.

Makes sense. So that is why its the Netherlands "B", that happens a lot more in Rugby and Cricket.

Agreed, soccer is not transitive. South Africa beating Morocco does not make them better than Brazil, just as Nigeria drawing with Lesotho proves little about another matchup.

Amateur teams can initially trouble professional sides because they often play direct, defensive and very unpredictable soccer, forcing the stronger team to adjust. Also soccers low scoring nature makes these mismatches closer than the difference in ability suggests.
