Decisions decisions. So start of April, dad's buying me a car. R90k budget. Sister might stretch by another R10k if need be. Now obviously as a 22 year old, inclination is to go with looks. I've got in order of precedence:

- VW Polo
Budget stretch, seen a few around R95k - R105k mark.
- Hyundai i20
Classy looks, and few around budget.
- Opel Corsa
Might be slightly off budget like the Polo in terms of a decent one.
- Polo Vivo
Would consider it, but twin brother has it, and so darn everywhere!
- Ford Figo
Little, nifty, quite affordable, and prob the most hassle free in terms of budget.

Not looking at any specifics like fuel savor, or engine capacity etc. For the budget, might be inclined to buy off an individual. But Vivo and Figo being the only "dealer" ones.

P.S I don't entertain Picanto's and Etios's.

P. P. S, my dad's quite biased about any car above 70,000KM and 3-4 years or more older.

The Figo seems nice. I'd give the Vivo a miss...the general opinion seems to be to rather stretch the budget to a polo/golf if it must be VW.

Personally I don't like the way the Opel's rev but thats very much a subjective point.

i20...don't know enough to comment.

Classy looks? I20? Lol

For me it has that feel.

Thanks... Will look into extending and getting the Polo Polo.

1991 COTY Opel Monza. It's a hit with the ladies.

I rather enjoy the i20, whenever I rent cars I try and get it. 1.4L, 6 speed gear box. The thing about hyundai and Kia is that all the extras you pay for in VWs comes standard in their models.

You can cut all the others (except perhaps the Figo) from your shortlist. Go for a test drive (I know, dealers are probably not really willing to let someone of your age test drive a car). That will give you a feel for both, and you can decide. A 5 year old car that's been well looked after is also not bad - mine was when I got it.

Hmm, something to consider. Thanks.

I'd take the Figo. i20 isn't a bad option either.

Also has the advantage of being newish...

Hello >>> Golf 6!

Won't last long though... Wish an option like this presents itself later on...

Hmm, thanks for the advice, never knew that... 2009 might be okish in his eyes. <2008 out of the league.

My only gripe with the Figo (and Vivo for that matter) is that they are definitely down a segment compared to the others. Very basic but reliable.

Wasn't aiming at highlighting the polo as top contender. The comment was intended more as a verdict on polo vs vivo, than overall verdict. Personally I've grown wary of VW...I've got a polo (very old) and the service bills have been fierce. Still enjoy it more than my sister's opel (half as old) but damn those bills sting.

Have you test-driven any of them?

Specific models & brands drive quite differently & you get weird matches/mismatches between driver & car so realistically you'll need to base your decision mostly on that. e.g. As I said I don't like the way Opel's rev...there is absolutely nothing wrong with it...I Havoc just don't like it. That kind of thing you can't get from forum advice.

If you do test-drives, be sure to pay careful attention to the image you project. You'll be facing a trained salesman & they're attuned to these things. So dress casually, but well - you're aiming at a laid-back definitely not poor image here. Seems trivial but its the difference between "no we don't have one of those" vs "no we don't have one, but I'll ask dealership next door to haul ass and get us one and we'll test drive something else while waiting". A salesman that smells a sale is your BFF. I'd also suggest taking your dad along...it seems to throw the salesmen off balance if there are two (male) people (preferably one old, one young) that are fighting as a team but are applying wildly different tactics. It prevents the salesman from telling you exactly what you want to hear - they pitch old people in terms of reliability, value, luxury etc and young people in terms sportiness, class, image etc. Bonus points if you can communicate with your dad in a non-SA language...earns you an instant "oh sht" look from the salesman. (Foreign lang is considered rude in most contexts, but this is serious business)

Figo for you (young, single, no kids???). Cost of ownership is great (seeing that your father is buying), parts readily available almost everywhere. Insurance won't kill you (or your father). Light on petrol (saves the toppie a few cents here too). I almost want to say bullet proof.
It's the practical and logic choice here.

Be sure will. Me father will be there. Thanks for the insights...

Thanks there. My father will handle insurance for the foreseeable future. As stated, not worried on fuel. Figo is ok, but it hasn't got that desired appeal for me. Maybe one could grab one for R70k, and use R30 to spoil/sport?

+1 Polo Maintenance is a bank breaker

Subbed. I am also looking into getting a car in this segment. Not buying new though as it will be doing a few kays for work etc.

OP, have you looked at getting a good 2nd hand Ford Fiesta? They are on my target list and you can find very decent ones for very little rand. Basically a Figo underneath with different body panels and interior. Bulletproof engine if serviced correctly from what I've heard, and judging by how many I see here in PE I have to agree :)

:wtf:

You still service it at the stealership???

Hmm, yes true, might be another close contender as well. The 2009-2011 models that is? I've actually looked at it. Looks decent. Some with few KM's and decently priced well within my budget.

Golf 6 @ R100k is a deal breaker by now :).

Search term "Polo 6" on Gumtree is yielding some nice Polo Polo's :D

These 2 are higher class than others as Brawlers stated. Let me go for something I later won't want to upgrade . . .

Vivo is crap. Polo out of budget. i20 is bit of a girls car. Corsa is an Opel.

I'd say Figo. Colleague at work has one and pretty decent. Services intervals of 20k as well.
