ANC just fails to get two-thirds majority

Pretoria - The African National Congress came within a whisker of receiving a two-thirds majority in the national elections, according to the IEC results system.

The party received a 65.90% win of the 17 680 729 valid votes cast. It received the support of 11 650 748 voters.

The Democratic Alliance, the official opposition party received a 16.66% of votes with 2 945 829 South Africans backing the party.

Newcomer Congress of the People received 7.42% with 1 311 027 votes.

The final voter turnout was recorded as 17 919 966 (77.3%). This was of the 23 181 997 South Africans who had registered to cast their ballots.

Reacting to the final results, United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa said his party was concerned about the "looming spectre of a near two-third majority".

He said the major win brought with it an arrogance of power. "One party dominance is not healthy for democracy in the long run.

"It is incumbent upon us in the opposition and civil society at large to seriously explore the ways in which we can bring about such a balanced party political system to South Africa," said Holomisa.

The UDM received 149 680 votes, 0.85% of the total.

stupid ignorant morons! :mad: pathetic excuses for citizens. If you didn't vote you ought to be ashamed of yourself. They should take away your right to vote. You don't deserve it.
 
People keep saying that this is a good result for the ANC but I don't think so. It's their worst performance since 1994, they dropped % in all provinces except KZN. The voter base increased by over 13% yet their support increased by only 7%. Compare that to the DA who gained over 1 million voters (as opposed to the ANCs 800000) which translates into over 52% in gains. They lost a province for the first time since 1999 and the last time they lost the WC was in 1994.
 
They achieved the impossible.....a "possible" criminal is our next president.....Ofc its an good result for the anc....Yap i <3 africa
 
Who do we thank for the ANC not having 2/3?

The Western Cape and the DA... Whose awesome... We're awesome ;) DA takes WC nationally with 48.78% and provincially with 51.46%

Overall I am now satisfied with the elections, although Im a bit dissapointed with the people that didnt vote, if those 6 million people DID vote, who knows maybe the ANC would have received those 2/3... But the ANC voters are very loyal, so probably not...

Also with just under 18 million voters this is the highest voter turn-out since 1994... This is a good sign, it means that more people feel that there is a reason to vote and that the youth and first time voters are increasing their say...

Exactly right. But these points will be ignored in the triumphalism.
 
These are more or less the seats in Parliament (until its finalized :))

257 = ANC (down 15 - from 272).. including 6 from old NNP ... down 21 - from 278
..64 = DA (up 16 - from 48) ANC's share ? :D +1
..29 = COPE (call that the best new kid on the block)
..18 = IFP (down 9 - from 27)
...3 = ID (down 4 - from 7)

Times are achanging ... for the better :rolleyes:

Just quickly checked News24 map, which isnt 100% correct anymore, outdated. But COPE is opposition party in more provinces than DA, some are very close with .1 percentage differences, anyone know the exact results with these cases?

why are you being so negative?

It is because of people like you with your very scientific predictions that sa is heading the way of zim that gets the people irritated and paints an unreasonable future of the country.

i think people tend to put huge amounts of power on the president.

i am not an anc supporter but i think we should try stay positive. Zuma has done nothing yet. we dont know what he will do but running the country into the ground seems pointless.

what were you expecting?

all we can do is stay positive and get to a place when we can really have a good, effective race for the next election.

Zimbabwe here we come!!! We are following in their footsteps. SA is over!!! Our forefathers worked their butts off and got killed to get us this country up and running.... I think they will turn over 10 times in their graves if they had to see what's going on here!!!

Why do you seem so surprised on how it turned out
I'm DA and think everything turned out the way we expected... meaning we got the WC ... and ANC does not have the 2/3 majority

Please fill us in (and yes this was not 100% free & fair)... what else? :)
 
So far a victory for democracy imho.

What happens from here on in is anyones guess but as the DA have said, the ANC have lost ground over the last few years, they are now more accountable than ever so that is a good thing.

How the ANC react to this is key, but at the end of the day the citizens should benefit.
