The voters roll is not very well maintained. It contains, for example, deceased people who voted in previous elections.
Also, there are many people that left the country and live overseas - these people were offered an opportunity to vote overseas these elections, but given the massive distances most of them would have had to travel to vote they just really couldn't do it.
Finally, remember, people who sit on the fence (and there are millions of people who do sit on the fence) most often do not vote. In SA, there isn't really a political party that is cut along liberal lines or conservative lines that would appeal to some voters such as foreigners-turned-citizens. Our political system is still quite distinctly racially divided.
The positive thing that came out in this election is that there is the beginnings of a shift from voting on strictly racial lines to voting for other reasons such as performance of parties in terms of governance. This is a vital change in mindset, as what we really have here is the beginnings of a new emergence of accountable governance. The DA has been given outright power in the WC. It is now vital that they build on a culture of good governance into the next elections. Cope must now prove that they can be a good opposition where they are the opposition by keeping the incumbent accountable.
The second most important thing is that the ANC's wings have been clipped. They cannot change the constitution on a whim any longer, meaning that the processes protected by the constitution that were not really favourable in JZ's eyes cannot be ****canned just by forcing a motion through parliament. This is really a very good result for SA in the end.

The sad thing is, the other countries won`t give a damn what happens in sa. As long as it it buggered up by..... "blacks" LOL! I was not Racist before the anc got into power. But I am becoming one! With every day that SA gets its infrastructure slowly wittled away by incompetent fools. Now lets see what they get up to next.

Well I'd also congratulate COPE. I reckon they helped in keeping that 2/3's majority down as well. I wonder how many COPE voters are ex-ANC voters ....
As to the 6million people that didn't vote, KM has some good points but to add to that, imagine if 66% (pure thumb suck) of those 6mil voted for the ANC .....

Hey dude, you need to get a grip. You gonna have serious stress issues otherwise. Try look at the positives:
ANC lost almost 4% of their support
DA gained almost 5%
ANC cannot change our constitution, as they didn't get 2 thirds
Anyone has gotta be better than Mbeki, who was the biggest racist and Africanist I have seen, bigger even than Mugabe. It was the best thing the ANC ever did by recalling him.
We may know Zuma committed crimes by accepting bribes, but we don't know that he is lying when he says he wants a New ANC government to correct the wrongs of the last few years... Let's have hope? It's all we've got for now...

In Australia the goverment forces each citizen to vote. That augt to be the norm here too.

ok first of all the ANC winning again, is not the 2nd coming of Christ so please chill with the "we are all doomed" argument, not everyone in the ANC is corrupt or incompetent (ok most of them in my opinion are) but the fact is that SA will go on, the world won't end tomorrow or before the next election, and no we are not under dictatorship so we will not turn into a Zimbabwe any time soon.
If you did not vote and think we are doomed then well blame yourself, you the none voter is the idiot in this picture, I hope the 6 million and the rest who were to lazy to even register have a happy time. Anyway, I wonder what happened to ID. Latest by-elections showed they were in strong position in Western Cape and Northern Cape. Unfortunately ID = EPIC FAIL
